We’re working with Chick-fil-A and I’ve received pushback from two separate people about being staffed on the project because of CFA’s stance on LGBTQ issues. (cont’d)

You could make the CfA engagement so incredibly professionally rewarding and successful, showcasing all of their wins and impact to the business, and drive promotion decisions tied to performance on this engagement, as your subtle long-term way to show that your staff should prioritize the decisions to work with you over the decision to not work on specific clients.

Dude...is your argument seriously “sacrifice your morals and I’ll help advance your career”? ...yikes

likefunny

I couldn’t imagine asking people to work at a client they morally objected to, regardless of the economic situation. They may have to be on the bench, and that may have implications for them, but they’re smart enough to know that. If they’ve come to you with that objection, they’ve already thought that through. We talk a lot about “Our people first.” Now is the time for you to demonstrate your commitment to your principles and your people. They have demonstrated theirs.

As an LGBTQ individual, if I voiced a concern and a desire NOT to be engaged with a certain client for issues near and dear to me, and then you decided to ignore my concerns - I would be quite upset, resent you, resent the client, the work, and continue making noise until I am removed from the engagement. At that point, you decided the moral issues that I expressed to you about something near and dear to me, something that makes me, me, is less than in importance to kicking off a project and getting some billable hours.

likehelpful

This might be an unpopular opinion...but given the current economic situation I don’t think this is the time to be picky about projects. Also think it’s important to separate personal beliefs from work when you’re in client services.

PwC4, or rather than valuing money, they don’t have the luxury to choose. Some of your colleagues and peers support their families - either their own children or sending money home to care for their younger siblings, parents, and grandparents. If they’re in this situation, they may not care which project they’re on, as long as it’s stable. I was there myself throughout my 20’s.

like

Having faced this and done the less optimal thing and suffered the pain - I highly recommend putting people on it who don’t have any moral objections to the work at hand . Otherwise client and you will both have a hard time and that has unhealthy ripple effects .

We had this issue with Planned Parenthood years ago. At the end of the day, the success of the project is going to depend on the relationship and trust that will be formed between the team and the client. So you can only have people on the team that don’t have a negative bias against the client’s organization and values.

like

You should listen to your staff and not force them to choose between their principles and their job. Try your best to smooth things over with potentially upset other clients due to scheduling rifts. Good luck.

If you want robotic employees, make some robots. People get to decide their fate, even in recessions. If we don’t have that ability, what are we left with?

Agreed.

I am on a short term gig at CFA and have to say this is the best client I have ever worked with. The way they treat their employees and contractors is such a joy. I am an ally and I had my doubts going in, but I have to say I am very pleasantly surprised to see the media image of CFA is nowhere close to reality.

like

I don’t understand this point...no one has ever accused CFA of mistreating it’s people or it’s contractors. The issue is how they distribute money to anti-LGBT causes. The way your comment reads feels no different than if an abolitionist went to a plantation in the South pre-civil war and said things weren’t as bad as you’d expected because the bed was really comfortable. It’s totally inconsistent with the thing you said you stood for (being an ally)

Every company has done objectionable things, but different issues touch us differently. I’m a gay man and would absolutely refuse to work for on a project for Chick Fil A for the damage they have done to a community I’m personally involved with

likeuplifting

On one hand, I can staff them on the project anyway, but I’d expect nothing but resentment and frankly, lower quality work from unfulfilled people. On the other hand, I can bring on some folks from another team to do this project, but this would create a massive scheduling rift and potentially upset other clients. Personally, I feel that every company has done things we might personally not agree with, and I’d understand rejecting an anti-LGBTQ project, but this just isn’t anywhere near that. What do I do here?

like

C3, It is not past donations either. They are current, they still do this stuff. The strength of the employees and good nature is immaterial when they at the same time sponsor anti LGBT initiatives

I faced this situation with a different client recently. The client had been in the news for inappropriate treatment of women and my best Sr Mgr didn’t want to work on the new engagement I won there. That was difficult, but not impossible to to find a replacement—I’m surprised you have such little staff available that you can’t substitute? As a GLBT PPMD I wouldn’t even pursue work at Chick Fil A so I’m certainly not going to force anyone anyone to work at a company they thought was misogynist. We need to respect our employees views as much as possible...particularly if they are objecting to something we can’t really understand because we have no firsthand experience with it.

EVERY. SINGLE. COMPANY. does questionable things and every single company does good things. If all of us stopped doing work for companies because we disagreed with something they did or a policy or the action of an executive or some other scandal, the consulting industry would not exist. Where do we draw the line? Can I do work for VW because they forged emission tests? Is it OK to sell a project to NBC because they protected sexual predators? Shall I cancel the project at Apple because of the slave labor in their factories? How far back do we go? Can I work on a Hugo Boss project knowing that they became a big company by making SS uniforms? I don't question anyone's moral position but sometimes we need to accept that we all chose a career that involves being in service to large companies. No large company is immune to some reprehensible behavior at some point in their history. While CfA may still be doing things that some find unacceptable, they also do many good things. Is there a point where the good cancels out the bad? They donate millions to good causes and treat/pay employees better than any other fast food company. In my area, they are the only food company that has offered to provide free meals to hospital staff who are working drive through COVID testing stations. Nobody should ever be forced to work on a project they object to, but sometimes we just need so put our political beliefs aside and just go to work and install that SAP system, or audit a supply chain, or develop an ad buying optimization model or whatever project has absolutely NOTHING to do with the company's objectionable behavior.

like

It’s different. CFA essentially had it engrained in their culture that that would treat lgbt differently with codified rules and years of actions backing it up.

So once upon I worked on a project for CFA. And my views of them drastically changed as I saw how well they treat their employees and the employee moral seems to be very high. Working with a client who is easy to work with makes a huge difference. Ive worked with some companies I was excited about but hard to work with their employees. Board of directors and csuite makes those decisions not the everyday employee. So maybe they are just dreading the atmosphere in general. Not sure. Having said that, I would have an open honest conversation with these employees not to persuade them by any means but to just acknowledge their feelings and the reality of working on the case engagement. If their concerns are about negative atmosphere vs funding I'd address that and reassure them. The fact that they brought this up as a concern means that you need to have real empathy and give them the open space to make that conclusion on their own given all the information. I'd also seek advice from a PPMD that is part of the LGBTQ+ affiliation and see if they can help them with alternative staffing or resources to be staffed as well as help navigate this issue.

I have a question, but to put it in context takes more characters than this allows--I'll explain more in a reply. Briefly, I struggled through seven miserable years of teaching until I finally got asked back by a school in 2019. My classroom management was disastrous; I knew it, but couldn't seem to fix it. Then I took a seminar, and got better. It really was that simple, though of course I'm still learning. So, can classroom management be taught? I believe so, but no one else seems to agree.
