We've had a few instances of possible COVID sick employees that returned with negative test results. Upper management is basically asking if there is something they can do to help control what employees are doing in their off time (ie. going to bars or other places with a lot of people). They even went as far as to mention something about a wedding that 3 of the employees are in together. Can an employer have ANY control over an employee's time off? It seems crazy to think that they think they can.

My husbands father works in a retirement community and “was asked” not to travel to high risk areas, and avoid large gathering of 20 or more people. If he did, he would have to use his own pto to quarantine for 2 weeks.

I don’t believe legally they can dictate what employees do outside of work, but they can dictate that they need to have a negative test or quarantine after traveling or participating in large gatherings that they are aware of.

I’ve been asked to weigh in on how to improve my firms parental leave policy. It’s currently 8 weeks paid for birth parent with an extra week for each year at the firm (up to 12 weeks total) and 2 weeks paid for non-birth parent. I’m in a major city, firm is a boutique that has been around a very long time. What would you suggest? Any studies or research you’ve seen recently on trends in parental leave policies also helpful. I’m a MSN, RN with 7 years of critical care nursing experience (ICU/PACU). Prior to becoming a nurse, I was a Medical Service Corps officer in the US Army for 8 years. I have my BSN/MSN and a non-nursing MA.

I just logged in for open enrollment and see that my benefit costs are increasing quite a bit. Family of 4 - medical/dental/vision will be about $345/pay period plus whatever I contribute to my HSA. Is this the norm now or is this way too much? We are also on an income based rate plan and I recently crossed into the bottom of the most expensive tier so it’s an even bigger hit over the normal YoY increase.

With COVID 19 going on how are the federal worker who have clearance teleworking? Or are you still on site and deemed mission critical ?

Is it unethical as realtors working in an office to block chunks of time off for personal reasons? Some of my coworkers stay in their desks for up to 10 hours, but I've taken up the habit of blocking at least 1 hour daily for lunch, breaks, and other issues that may arise. Wow…covid is really over. I live in a rural area where we knew covid was happening but it never really impacted the community or daily life. However when I’d go into the city it was very very obvious there were huge life impacts and fear. I just went into the city for the first time in about 3 months and it’s like covid never happened. It makes me wonder how many other things that have drastically changed (like wfh and hand sanitizer) will go back to normal as people go back to normal.

I had my PHR back in early 2000, then made a career change to a paramedic (I know, right). I called SHRM and they said I'm eligible to test again even though I only currently have 1.5 yrs of HR.

I purchased the online study guide and it seems that HR has gone in a completely different direction - more operations related than employee relations etc.

Did anyone find this online training to be helpful? I test in July, so any tips would be greatly appreciated!

I’m in a rather peculiar situation. I have been in the HR field going on 4 years, I have over 11 years of management experience, I got my PHR last year and I recently graduated with my MBA with a concentration in HR this month. I am ready for a more challenging role. However, there doesn’t seem to be much available at my current company. However, I am going on 5 months pregnant with the expectation of being out in October. I feel like once I mentioned my pregnancy I was in a holding pattern.

I’m taking the SPHR in less than 2 months and haven’t started studying for it. How difficult is it? I’ve been in HR for 20 years and have experienced ALOT in that time, although there are always employee relations scenarios that surprise me! How much do I really need to study for this?
