Ooof we piloted it this year and we’re going full in for every grade next year!
I push into ELA as a consultant teacher for 3rd-5th so I was able to see how it progresses! My initial thoughts were “WOW my students are way behind grade level,” and “holy crap I absolutely hate the 5th grade second module.”
I think I’m in the rare group of people that actually REALLY liked it! As a consultant teacher it’s fantastic to have my own teacher manual and actually know what we’re doing each day. It is definitely too rigorous for our students right now. We had to modify a LOT just to allow kids access to the curriculum (all the students not just my classified kiddos). I can see where this program will take us in 4-5 years though and that’s really exciting.
The pacing and timing is tough!!!! 90 minutes a day for the ELA block? We do NOT have that time. It took us about 2-3 days per lesson in 3rd grade and a week plus for 4th and 5th.
I think overall it’s a great program but it’s definitely going to take some time to “get it right” and for kids to come into 3rd-5th ready for 3rd-5th grade curriculum, so that’s a little scary. I think some of the older teachers see it as just another program to learn and they aren’t super thrilled. My hope is that we stick with it until at least next years kindergarteners progress through 5th grade.
There is a LOT of writing - which at least in my district the kids really need the most. Most of my students seemed to really enjoy the topics and books we read!
I say go into it with an open mind and realize that it’s absolutely not going to be perfect for a year or 2!
I think this ought to help: https://www.theintelligencer.net/news/top-headlines/2021/08/several-selections-pulled-after-review-of-wit-and-wisdom-reading-curriculum-in-ohio-county-schools/
So far, not a fan. We use it in 5th grade. The lessons are long and the vocabulary is higher than 5th grade. It also is difficult to differentiate.
