There is life beyond consulting. And you can very well find a role in the industry. You'd need to identify the area(s) of your strength and interest first. Rest is an operational process of applying, interviewing and repeating until you find the right role.

Honestly, you should reach for the stars. That might be cheesy but I think you can do anything you set your mind to if you have a genuine interest in it. Hey, maybe you’re not an expert in whatever job you might walk into an interview for. Whatever. As long as you show a passion and intent to learn about it you’re in a better spot. Tell them you don’t know everything, but you’re willing to learn. How are your skills and knowledge transferable? How can you improve the team and business with your perspective? Sometimes a different perspective, off the beaten path, is more valuable than what people can contribute for being in the industry for years

Being quickly typecasted into a role is not an easy challenge to overcome. There're advantages however that you CAN draw upon even if it might take some time to get back "into the game" of job searching. Having the persistence and dedication to your work for 10 years says a lot about your willingness to stick with it. That being said, you will need to make it easy for the audience of your application to connect your past with your future aspiration(s) beyond the typecast. To start I'd try to capture the kinds of engagements or clients or challenges, etc. you've had over the past decade. Just whiteboard it to start, and then keep going... After you feel like you've somewhat representatively captured the overall landscape of your "repertoire" (can keep it an open list as you do the next step...), look for patterns that emerges as you walk through the past years. For example, note the type of challenges, or the nature of problem solving, or the dynamics of collaboration, etc that can potentially become a bridge into your next role. This might be a good time to identify the inspirational, or rewarding, or appealing aspects of your past work that can point you to your next role. Then see if you can gather corroborating support for these vignettes, like references, business cases, new skills learned or old skills refined, etc . Hope that, regardless of the immediate outcome, this will be a rewarding exercise as you reflect on what I trust has been a tough but worthwhile decade.
