This is like college continued - 1. Surrounded by accomplished and smart people who want you to succeed 2. resources to continue learning whatever you find interesting and opportunities to bring your learning to business and people 3. Travel to new places and meet new people everywhere (sometimes good) 4. And get paid a great salary (I know lots of people who get paid way less for way less opportunities than we get) Anyone who says consulting is probably burnt out. But if all you see is negative, always tap into something you find is meaningful to see the bigger picture or the positives in whatever you do - that’s poetry and teaching for me.
Says an analyst
For me mostly it’s the team dynamic and the incredibly close relationships we get to build. All of my friends (coworkers) who have left for industry admit they no longer have that. They have coworkers - not friends at work - which is an important distinction. Some people don’t care about making friends with their coworkers but I value it. I’ve built a lot lasting friendships in consulting over the years, with clients as well. Also, a lot of people complain that in consulting we have 10+ bosses at any given time. I actually like that. Between practice leads, industry leads, account leads, career counselors, talent leads... lots of people to build your network with who can really help drive your career. And if you’re having an off week or month or year with some of them, you can cozy up to another one or two and still make it work. Never really tied to a single boss who you either get along with or don’t. You can generally navigate who you report to and distance yourself from those you don’t want anything to do with much easier than you can in other jobs.
For me literally just that money, miles, perks.
A4, no other reason
I get bored easily, so what keeps me going is working on different projects with different teams and different clients. Other than that, the salary. I don’t give two shits about the travel points, if anything, the points are a depressing aspect of this job because it’s a constant reminder as to how much we are away from our homes and families
What’s your role?
I get real and significant personal satisfaction from helping my clients and my teams succeed, on a human level, ie helping them grow, learn, overcome challenge, have impact.
never change. My experience with managers so far is not encouraging.
Meeting new people. Like someone else said, I get bored easily. I was known in high school and college to switch jobs a lot because I got bored (always left on good terms tho). Working with different people in different places makes you think about the backgrounds those people grew up in. It’s crazy how many different mini cultures each region of the US has.
1. I’m itinerant by nature and have diverse interests - I’d get bored in most other jobs 2. Surrounded by high-quality team mates who require me to up my game 3. I enjoy the craft of consulting; the logic of problem solving, using written, analytical and presentational skills to bring people on a journey 4. I find my subject matter domain purposeful 5. I also value being able to have impact at a strategic level
ever consider that you always see those answers because they're truth? force us to tell you something else and you'll only get lies lol
Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I just do it because i dont have anything else to do. No one else will hire me because no one likes a loud-mouthed know-it-all who knows nothing
Well.. being a Manger is tough work
Coaching someone and seeing that person change for the better. I’ve seen so many people grow and accomplish great things and this pride in my co-workers never gets old. Consulting offers great opportunities for people to step up and step into so many different challenging situations, so the learning for all of us really never stops.
I work from home so I can wank one when ever I want
🤣
Visa challenges have made me continue towards this rabbit hole!
Ey3 Of course we know that. I am an international transferee and Eb1. Have I-140 approved. Can’t take the risk of changing the job before GC is in hand. Took years to transfer. Took more years to apply and would probably take more years before PD becomes current. Congrats you have already spent decades in Consulting and now Institutionalized.
I enjoy suffering
I don’t know about others, but the degrees of freedom I have in my job excites me
For all the people that have stayed because they get bored easily - why is your life centered around your occupation? You’ll have the time to meaningfully impact your family and community if you are so bored in another job
Most of us are hyper competitive, type As. Consulting is like a sport to most of us
The exit opportunities excite me, knowing that I’m getting exposure to various industries and companies, never know what’s next!
Awesome co-workers!
Being in a field where I’m uncomfortable af cause that’s means I’m learning something new
I’m over it all actually. I admire those who can make a career of this. But it seems at a certain point this becomes your life or you give it up to have a life.
I’m doing it for the increased certainty that I’ll die an early death
