We have a minimum grading policy where students get nothing less than a 50%. This policy, along with the lack of consequences for phone use in class, has been unbelievably detrimental to learning. Test scores have plummeted, but graduation rate has gone up and that is all admin cares about. We are graduating students that have learned very little and have no accountability to anything or anyone. We have to let kids fail instead of lowering the bar to pass them along. Looking at what we are doing to these kids makes me very scared of the future.
We have the same issue in VA.
WYOMING! I'm headed up to Thermopolis next month where I have my house (can't afford to buy in this craptastic state). Can't wait to visit my real home and this time my dad's coming out to fly fish. :)
OK, missing assignments and zeros. We don't have accountability, it's a circus of free choice here. I can tell you what I do, though (copy/paste from my Canvas home page and addressed to students):
1. I do not "grade on attendance". EVERYTHING that you need to do for class, including instructions, is here on Canvas. You can complete assignments at whatever time of day works for YOU! I am here to add supportive material and information to what you have available online already. In short, if you miss my class period, you can still easily complete any work online.
2. DUE DATES and DROP DATES: Assignments are set up to reflect "due dates" and "drop dates". Due dates are in place to show you the flow of the class, so you are not overwhelmed with months of assignments all being "due" at the end of a grading period. I do NOT take off points from assignments turned in "late". However, I do use "drop dates", meaning that after a certain date, some assignments will not be able to be done. In this class, the first **second semester** "Drop Date" for ALL assignments due up until March 25 is April 8. That means that all assignments have AT LEAST three weeks (if not more) to be completed and submitted. *Please note: I do not reopen assignments after a "drop date"*
***Attached is my 4-point grading scale***
We have to work with our students to try to make up at least 45% of those 0's. We have to document that we tried
That sounds like a lot of extra work. Obviously teachers work with kids to get caught up already, but documenting is too time consuming.
We are planning to go to a four-point scale for next year so that the zeros have less impact. My opinion is not relevant to the plan.
We just give them a 50%
None. They get the whoooole quarter to make it up for full credit. This is required of us.
