What advice would you give your 25-year-old self?

Dump him. D U M P him.

Put money aside in savings. Put a little bit in your 401k. (I wasn’t making much in my early / mid 20s).

Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself. Start understanding that you deserve what you need and want. You aren’t a burden on anyone when asking for what you need.

Educate yourself on boundaries.

Don’t over-extend yourself supporting your friends.

You don’t need to drink that much.

Spend more time updating your portfolio with the kind of work you want to do.

Start going to therapy.

I love that portfolio tip!

Live alone for a few years. Save your pennies. Don’t get married until after 30 and when you do, make sure they are worthy. Be brave and be bold. Love your body. Never stop learning. Always know you are beautiful and stronger than you think. (btw: I am now 50. Married to the nicest guy in the world who is always there and treats me like a 👑. Have a couple million in the bank and a couple of kids. 25 year old me would fall out of her chair if she know she’d be sitting where i am today.) You have got this 25 year olds! ❤️

Aw thanks so much. You made my morning. It’s been a journey with a lot of hard work, both professionally and personally. And I also forgot to add wear sunscreen. My grams passed that one on and I thank her everyday.

Keep working your ass off, but have a life outside of work. Your career is not the be all end all of who you are. You are smart and passionate, but still so young. Stop secretly judging the moms who leave at 5PM and patting yourself in the back for being more dedicated. It’s internalized misogyny and one day you’ll be her.

likehelpfulsmart

My point was about judgement. I’m commenting under someone else’s post, but I do agree with it! I never said everyone should have kids, but regardless of whether you do or not you should respect your fellow woman and not look down on them for prioritizing something besides work past 5pm (honestly whatever it is! Kids or not kids). I never name called anyone, and yes judgement can go both ways and it’s not ok to do it. I spoke from my own experience as a childless woman as well I have heard numerous times judgmental and inappropriate and yes sometimes borderline misogynistic comments behind other moms backs by other woman or men.

I think both of us can agree there is this issue of woman being judged. We are judged for having kids and judged for making a choice for not having them lol.

However I think attitudes towards motherhood and work are an important topic and glad the commenter highlighted this specific issue. Because I have literary witnessed woman being excluded from projects or meetings because they had a “fucking kid” at home..

Don’t let your career or partner define you
Invest more in your 401k
You don’t know it all- and that’s ok!
Call/visit your family more often-they won’t be around forever.
Take risks- life really does go by quickly

likesmarthelpful

Ugh heck yes to your 401k. Shoulda woulda

like

Don’t stay because you’re comfortable.

likesmart

Second that. Or don't not move jobs because you think it's going to look bad on your resume. Just be ready to explain yourself when asked.

likeupliftinghelpful

Ask for more money. You’re worth it.

likeuplifting

Don’t worry so much about “if you’ll meet someone” and “if you’ll make enough money” - everything takes time. Chill and enjoy the now.

likeuplifting

Me at 26 constantly worried about both of these things 😅

You’re a smart passionate cookie and it takes years sometimes to find what you want to do and even then sometimes you just want to try everything as your path is not just one road! You don’t need to conform!!

Don’t call Ted back. (Ted was a problematic, charming, hot as hell private investigator who would only call me after 2 AM). Actually, you know what, 25 year old me? Go on and have Ted roll up! Future You got over him pretty fast, advanced her career, met a more reliable guy. Enjoy your Teds, in whatever shape they may take.

likefunny

As a married woman in my 30’s - I second that advise. More Teds.

Don't judge people you work with... be "friendly" and keep in touch with everyone. One day, you may walk into a client's office and have to work with them as your partner agency or you might need them to put in a good word for you or even hire you!

likesmart

Yes, you are talented enough/ smart enough/ creative enough to be here. This company hired you for a reason.

Also, therapy is nothing to be ashamed of!

likeupliftinghelpful

This!! And I’d say to start therapy NOW, not 4 years later 😭🤣

like

Wow agree with all of these.

Also - it’s ok to be in a serious relationship that might lead to more...it doesn’t have to be one (career) or the other (marriage).

like

I agree. I started dating my now husband when I was 25. On the other hand, he was also working under the same holding group as me, so he understood how things worked.

I’m so mad at myself for not following this advice: 401K. Max it out. Pay your future first so you don’t have to worry about a future in this biz.

Oh and my friends and I always joked we’d write a book called: I should have humped more and other lessons for our younger selves.

So that too. Hump more

likefunnyuplifting

Guys, gals. Whatever floats your boat - but hump more while you’re younger. You still can while you’re older, but it’s just not as free and easy.

Never take a job purely for the money. Make sure it’s a job you want with people you admire that can teach you something.

likesmart

Conversely, get paid what you are worth and don’t compromise on that for “experience” or “exposure.”

like

Stop mourning your younger self. You’re her right now, 10 years from now.

like

Be patient, success and bigger pay checks take time. Also, don’t wait to do something until “you’re ready” - take the risk.

like

Don’t let your identity get so tied in up in your job / where you work. Make more time for yourself, your family/friends, and what makes you happy - even if that means finding it along the way.

Also, know your worth. Don’t settle for less.

Asking for a friend - Anyone experienced this nonsense! Moved from Deloitte USI to the states. Tagged as an Offshore resource for years. They are saying she is not eligible for maternity leave now coz she doesn’t have a project tagged for 6 months after her returning from the leave. It doesn’t make any sense but they are saying this is Deloitte rule? Anyone has any similar experience? Any point of contact also will be helpful.
