Detroit. Not hypothetical; that's the plan
Baltimore
This is a good choice!
Phoenix!
Before the pandemic, Charlotte, NC. Property values rising but still affordable. Lots of big companies ranging from banks to tech have relatively large corporate office there. Lots of cool areas in the city. Southern charm but lots of people from elsewhere so you don't feel like your out of place. Not a real estate expert so take my opinion with a grain of salt
I live here. What neighborhoods exactly do you recommend?

If I'm being very technical about it, I'd live in a state with no state income tax and no sales tax. But such a state does not, yet, exist in the union.
So the next best option is to live in a state with no income tax, but close to another state with no sales tax, where I can do all of my shopping.
Vancouver, WA fits the bill. Washington does not have state tax and Oregon does not have sales tax. Portland is just south across the Columbia river.

I grew up in New Hampshire. So I can verify neither income or sales tax exist. Live free or die baby!
Anchorage
Isn’t COLA there pretty high?
Chicago. Most of the big city perks with low housing prices

All about the frame of reference I suppose. I think of Chicago compared to other midwestern cities like Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Detroit, Columbus and it seems like the expenditures are high by comparison. I don't think I will be able to both retire early and stay in Chicago.

Anywhere my rentals and property value will sky rocket yet still relatively cheap - Austin, Phoenix, Tampa etc.
Honolulu
Having grown up near Honolulu, it is not a cheap place to live. Honolulu commonly appears on "top 10 most expensive US cities to live in" lists. Also fairly high taxes. Besides cost of living, otherwise great place to live if you want more isolation from mainland USA
