They have much higher artistic standards than most advertising clients. Their in house artists are some of the best in the world, matching their style is going to be very very hard.

Ubisoft is a nightmare. Asked us to pitch a game launch, ghosted us, and then produced one of our concepts. This happened multiple times.

I pitched Ubisoft. After our first tissue session, they sent our idea to all the agencies and asked them develop something like it.

There are big budgets, which is cool. A lot of projects start up and go away, thats a bummer. The big "villain" in the whole thing is the amount of gameplay footage you have to use. It can be anywhere from 0 to 100% and changes throughout the process. But overall its one if the last sexy categories in advertising so theres that.

Oh, Ubisoft...I worked on it at two different places about three years apart. Neither of the projects ended up happening for whatever reason.

My agency at the time was so angry they made them pay for us to continue pitching. We lost, though.

Which agency has it? Or do they just assign random projects to random agencies in SF?

In general I’ve enjoyed gaming clients. The biggest x-factor are the developers, not the publishers. It’s like the music industry: you have the artists, the talent wanting to practice their craft, and the labels, who are responsible for marketing them. So you essentially have two sometimes very different clients for every project, both with multiple stakeholders.

The developers are 150% crazy-busy trying to finish their game on time and frequently either don’t give a shit about your cool ad or social campaign concept, or absolutely do not have any extra resources to peel off to provide you anything custom, so you’ll just get the same screenshots and trailers the general public or media outlets would receive.

Every once in awhile you get a client who is into what you’re doing and can find you a liaison to help slip you stuff, pull favors, and act as your advocate to the rest of their team, but that’s generally an exception.

It can be the very best or very worst depending on game studio, publisher, budget, and timing. But when it’s great, the bad times are actually worth it.

Ubisoft sucks. Low to no budgets. Usually only push their weaker titles. Bethesda is solid but titles are so strong they don’t need much ad support. The real money is console advertising.

I worked for Ubisoft Europe and They took four months to pay me and also expected me to work nearly 24 hours straight at the drop of a hat. Don't.

Are you pitching Ubisoft?

Depends, how good are you at digging out an old rock track and then layering it over a frenetic gaming montage?
