Everyone in partnership tax always thinks they can only go to partnership tax opportunities. You can look for anything in tax. Don’t think that corporate tax opportunities are out of the question. Yes there might be a learning curve but you probably have enough tax knowledge to pick it up fast. Plenty of people in industry lack the extend of tax knowledge that you might have because they only deal with the specific facts and circumstances for their company.
Totally agreed! I had 3 years of ALL partnership tax experience, jumped to private for corporate tax. Being loving it since day 1.
Rising Star
Take a look on LinkedIn. Lots of company positions looking for someone with tax experience in PA
Lots of funds out there looking for people with partnership tax experience... most of them hire big 4 to do the heavy lifting so I think it’s a sweet gig.
Plenty of opportunities at private equity funds doing fund accounting and tax.
You’re waiting until after mini?
As a senior you could do literally anything. You're only really limited at senior manager or if it's manager and you're trying to go into something really specialized (but not the other way imo) For example, I do a mix of international tax and transfer pricing and would struggle going into partnerships, but I could probably do a manager fed asc740 role.
Talking about transitioning from public to industry, for the record
What would you say for a Senior with State and Local tax in partnership background? Would industry make you to work on Federal/International tax stuff even if no experience? Will it be a big learning curve from PA to industry?
