An average week is 65-70 hours (5x 12-13 hour days, plus a cumulative ~5 hours spread over the weekend). Slow periods can be 50 hours or less. Worst one-off week ever was >120, but that was a pretty exciting period with lots to do so I didn’t really notice or mind the hours.
Sure there’s variance (there are a few partners who are just absolute machines), but a lot of people overstate their hours or peg to their worst high water mark. Also the hours I quoted don’t include reading/answering the odd email after hours, or getting on a random call here from the back of a cab, etc.
I started in banking so have a fair number of friends in PE now (both MF and MM). The reality is the answers are all over the board, because so are the hours. Some places it can be a pretty easy 50-60 a week, sometimes less. Other places the hours can be worse than banking, because now you’re both working deals and getting pulled into fighting portfolio co fires. And like banking, it ebbs and flows. I’d say overall, it’s maybe 10-15% less hours overall than banking with less weekends, but the same if not more variance. Just more predictability since you’re calling the shots now vs reacting to the buy-side client.
MF hours are close to banking because you end up chasing a lot more deals and those deals generally have shorter timelines so the work is condensed (70-80 hours generally with peaks of 100 plus). MM varies more and culture of the firm and investment mandate and structure (operating partners available vs. doing all the portco mgmt as wel) has a lot to do with it but I’d say 60-70 hours generally with peaks being 100 plus as well).
Would love to know this too
What desk? Massive difference between back office and the—true PE—investment team.
