While I’ve always supported the idea of buying higher quality for a little more (I always buy well made leather shoes and have them re-heeled and re-soled by a cobble rather than replacing them), know that fashion is never an “investment.” Investments appreciate in value, and anything you wear and use will depreciate in value. That said, when you’re buying more expensive pieces *because you want to* (and that’s a valid use of money, if you’ve paid off your student loans and aren’t effectively financing a purse with debt), I avoid buying things with higher maintenance costs (biggest example is my car: it’s luxury, but it was a 5 y.o. Lexus with the lowest maintenance costs ever and cost less than all of my friends’ brand new non-lux cars) and I take good care of them. That means I buy suiting that can be washed in the washing machine (yes, it exists, and it’s way more comfortable) rather than dry cleaned (very harsh chemicals wear the fabric much faster—also much more expensive obviously), I weather-treat my leather shoes before wearing them, and I store my bags upright in dust bags on their own shelf. One cost that’s totally worth it is going to a tailor btw—I get all my pants hemmed, and it is not expensive at all, but clothes look infinitely better when they fit! And NEVER get anything too expensive for you to feel comfortable wearing. A client from pre-law school bought me a Michael Kors bag as a gift before I left for law school, and I was too precious about it to use it until I was a lawyer 4 years later—it was the most expensive piece I owned! It’s a great bag that I now take to court, but it was *too* expensive for me to feel comfortable taking anywhere, even though that’s what they’re for: to be used.

Chanel ballerina flats. If you care for them properly (resole as needed, etc.), they'll last forever. I'm more and more into jewelery lately. Haven't bought one yet, but looking at tennis bracelets. A nice, substantial pair of diamond studs. A Cartier trinity ring.

I bought a Burberry trench in black. No regrets, and love how it looks. I also bought Stuart Weitzman 5050 boots this year. Not really for work, but a fun, cute splurge.

I have a Burberry trench too. But I found their stitches not great at all...

LV neverfull purse. It’ll last for years and I like it better than carrying a briefcase. It’s great for carrying papers for simple Case Management Conferences. Super roomy.

I’ve had mine for 8 years! Use it on and off though

I love Stuart Weitzman shoes. Well made, comfortable, and beautiful.

Ditto. Size 12 Hallelujah for them. I love my SWs.

A pair of patent black leather pumps. Mine are So Kate Louboutins. Timeless, work and fun appropriate, and my favourite investment piece.

I agree that the 100mm are much more comfortable than the 120mm and easier to walk in. I also wear 5 inch heels regularly out and about and find myself struggling with the 120mm. Recommend the 100mm all the way!

A good watch. I love my Rolex.

Woman. The women’s watches are much smaller - if it’s the size that bothers you. I enjoy a larger watch - so I opted for a smaller faced men’s. 🤷🏼‍♀️. I’m also 5’9 so it doesn’t look weird.

I’ve loved my Brass clothing especially tops. I buy older Kate spade bags from eBay from the timeframe their leather was better IMO. I love the referrals on this post.

I bought a givenchy Antigona bag with my first bonus and it’s still selling at the same price I paid for it almost 4 years ago. My Rolex datejust and Burberry trench I don’t regret at all either!

I also think investing in tailoring will make ANYTHING better. When in doubt - I tailor it.

Used to love luxury then saw how great some fakes are and stopped caring to support such an inflated cost for something equally made in China. I've been switching focus to investments and experiences as those, well for me personally, are more valuable and don't necessarily depreciate. I'd steer clear of Louboutin they are incredibly uncomfortable and opt for a nice pair of valentinos. As far as bags go chanel is usually timeless as well as gucci(these days everywhere). Ultimately how people choose to spend is really about what you love-- I know someone who spends hundreds on underwear! Search for what gives you an extra pep in your step that you'll actually use and not be afraid to ruin where the item will literally collect dust. I also think bags, jewelry, sunglasses are safer bet than clothing- if you have kids or weight gain clothing will be difficult to wear and styles also change.

I agree - I’d rather buy new stuff from banana republic every year than holding onto a piece of clothing from theory for three years. I’m petite, it saves money to shop in petite sections..

A signature watch, a classic handbag, and a beautiful cashmere or camel hair coat. Max Mara makes coats that will never go out of style. Worth the money.

I spend more on shoes now that I'm older. Stylish AND comfortable costs more!

For Stuart weitzman I love the nearly nudes for non work. For work, I have great plain black pumps for court and it unfortunately looks like they don’t make them anymore, but the anicia looks the most similar in terms of heel style/height and toe shape. I should also add my Alexander wang kori block heeled booties are my favorite “investment” purchase, I wear them at work and outside work and they still look great three or four years later, I just take them to get resoled once a year.
