What are some good “get to know you” questions for the first day of school that all students feel good about answering? The “what did you do this summer” may leave some students out.

What color is your toothbrush? What’s your favorite pizza topping? Tacos- hard shell or soft shell? Who’s your favorite Marvel character? Would you rather have x-ray vision or be able to fly? Beach vacation or mountain vacation? What was your favorite Olympics event from the summer?

I sometimes get a lot of traction if I ask students what they would do if they were in charge of ___________. For example, if they were in charge of picking a new mascot. If they were in charge of evacuating the planet. If they were picked to negotiate an end to a war, it came down to rock-paper-scissors, and they had to submit what they would throw ahead of time. If they were in charge of making a new club/activity/sport at the high school. If they could form their own country. If they had to create a zombie survival plan. Let them exercise their creative juices.

I have started asking what teacher/staff member they would feel comfortable going to if they had a problem or needed someone to talk to. I don’t intend the info to undermine the work of our school counselors, but it helps me get to know that students based on which faculty member they feel comfortable with. For the ones who say they don’t have anyone, I make extra effort to connect with those kids myself.

Same, I like to ask what activities they would include on the first day if they were the teacher or ran the schools. What were their favorite class activities the year before and what new goals they have for this year. Favorite songs and have a playlist for the next day :) it is always fun to do these questions with four corners or I would rather questions. I am getting excited just talking about it !

Great ideas. Thank you for sharing

Would you rather questions are super fun! Would you rather eat broccoli or carrots? Would you rather listen to music or watch tv. Etc… plenty of slides on google!!

I ask them to list three things they do well and three things that are challenging, not necessarily related to content. Also three things they like and dislike. I want them to see that all of us struggle with something and that we may have a lot in common.

I try to do a poll of what was popular during the summer. This lets me teach how to use whatever my digital assessment solution will be also. Questions such as favorite song of summer, top sports story, how much did you sleep, and many more. Some are general questions that are fun for them to see the group answers survey style, and some are snuck in to give me a handle on what to expect from the class dynamic in that group. I also hand out a bingo style card with a bunch of questions that range from a tiny amount of vulnerability (who is the best looking person in the world?) to the mundane (what is your favorite drink at the local fast food place?) I let them take this home and return it later and I post mine.

I compile a list of questions such as do you prefer Coke or Pepsi or which brand of tooth paste they use. Kids love it. It shows how we all band around products. Unity build quickly. It also shows that we are all people having shared experiences.

I would give them a choice of maybe three out of five. 1. What was the best part of your school year last year? Explain. 2. What is one challenge you have faced and how have you overcome it? 3. What is one career that you find interesting but are not sure you will pursue? Explain. 4. Describe how you have changed in the past year? 5. Describe your ideal support system - who do you want to have to help you succeed or support you when you struggle? How would they do this?

Ask “ you wouldn’t guess this about me by looking at me but …” fill in the blank

I have a ball—it’s very soft—with sentence beginnings on it. The ball looks like a soccer ball and each panel has a different topic. I sat and tossed it back and forth with my partner for an hour. I learned so much about her that even after 38 years, I didn’t know.

T2 strategy consulting associate (pre-MBA) with an offer to join PE boutique. Worth it if the eventual goal is working at a MM PE or large VC fund? What would be the most realistic route? 2Y PE > MBA > VC? PE Form has a SaaS focus so I’d assume that’s a plus.

When you have been ghosted by your ex, how do you get over the anger and hurt when there is so much you want to say to them? PS: I cheated on her and came to tell her the truth. We went on couple therapy and things were fine (at least what I thought). She then waited for me to travel for work and came to pick up all her stuffs, blocked me from everywhere and just disappeared. She keeps all the payments I making (didn’t change that, her phone, Netflix, her car, etc.) but totally disappeared.

My principal approached me in the car pick up line on Friday to inform me that I’ve taken to many days off & school has just started. I took 1day off when my daughter tested positive for Covid, I had an doctor’s appt that had been scheduled 6 months ago to see the hematologist. Being that I’m anemic, current labs showed I need to have 2 iron infusions. I put in for 2 more days off to have that done. He told me in the future to wait until a work day! We done have any until December!!
