My parents were ridiculously strict and I feel like it robbed me of a normal childhood/youth. I hope when I start a family to be more lenient and allow my kids to have fun.

This might be controversial but everything in South Asian culture adopted from the Indian culture is toxic. We need to strip that from our identity.
Islamic empire was grown based on conquering non-Muslim lands - not unlike any other empire including Christianity and Hinduism. People were not converted through mass forced conversion - this what Indian curriculum taught you. First few generations most Muslims were immigrants. Vast majority of Muslims in Indian subcontinent are of central Asian descent. The ones that are not (e.g. Bengal, Kerala) converted through organic conversion. After 1000 years of Muslim rule, how are there still more Hindus than Muslims in South Asia if you prescribe to the conversion by conquest theory. Conversion by conquest was practiced by Christians.
Actually, most prominent way Islam was spread was through the trade routes Muslims created connecting the whole world. Anyone who converted for show or to gain favour, converted back very soon.
