Im also 23 and living with parents. I bake after work to help check out. I’ve gotten really into it the last couple months. Made some oatmeal creme pies last night :)
also 23 living w parents and im so bored all the time 😭
Gym or rock climbing is a good take up! I produce music so I’d highly suggest some form of that, guitar or whatever you want (but I stare at a computer all day to make electronic music lol). Pick up some yoga and meditation or some form of art! Blender for 3D modeling if you want to do some crazy stuff (computer though) or just start some basic painting. My suggestion in artistic mindset during the work week, and a more get out and be active on weekends
I started painting (just 20-30 mins on a week night, bulk is done on weekends), meal prepping with music on, going for a night walk/run, I know lots of folks who enjoy a physical book as well :)
Take a nice 30 minute walk around your neighborhood to destress and soak up nature. Also, grab a planner or calendar and sprinkle different activities each night. Maybe one night you take a bath, another night grab dinner with a friend, another night go workout.
Depends on the neighborhood like you said, but use the same common sense of navigating a new place - if you think an area will be sus, walk with someone. Don’t be distracted, stay alert, avoid certain places at night - the easiest targets are the unassuming tourists. None of this to scare you though, the city is amazing and I’ve been here for 3-4 years without facing a problem. Just being cognizant that there IS crime in a city this large and it would be remiss to ignore it. Just use your street smarts and stay vigilant.
Im 23 too. I started volunteering. I go to the homeless shelter and hand out meals. And I’m signing up for a program where I can read with elementary school students for an hour a week. I’m thinking about getting my gun license and going to the shooting range. And I want to take martial arts lessons. And if you get it to cooking, that’ll take up all your time right there.
Work out, read, play music, or learn something new
In addition to what others said, I took up knitting! A blanket takes a while to make and keeps my hands busy
My mother is a celebrity in the yarn community. That’s a great hobby.
taekwondo! its so much fun!
I think it’s tough to avoid screens in a WFH environment (because it’s often so easy to vegetate in front of the TV post-work). However, getting yourself out of the house/apartment to go to the gym or get some physical exercise will make the day so much better. It helps you relieve any pent up stress you’re keeping in from steeling yourself to the criticism, feedback, or tough convos with managers and clients. Our industry is mentally straining and a release is necessary. And f*** the price tag. I always say the $ you pay for the benefits of the gym cannot be measured in a tangible ROI. Mental and physical health are priceless.
Reading book! Find an author you love, and you can spend months pouring through their books. Some of my favorites are Brandon Sanderson, Steven King, and Isaac Asimov.
Basketball at your local gym! Even if your alone just getting shots up with your headphones in!
I wish I could live with my parents. Boredom > spending money on rent. My family is from rural America, but is still very traditionally Asian from a cultural perspective. I wouldn’t survive a month there.
Volunteer, Coach younger kids, teach an after school program
When I was stuck working from home in a lockdown, it was pretty tough especially given i live on my own. I took up a bit of mixology and cocktail making, the guitar, and kept working on my cooking skills!
I got into woodworking recently and find it tremendously enjoyable. NYC apt is likely not great for power tools, but you can totally do it with hand tools and learn fine woodworking. Hand tools meaning saws, hand planes, etc. Lots you can learn and buy down this rabbit hole.
During the summer and fall I joined a softball league and now I play volleyball since it's cold. They have different skill level leagues so you can play no matter your athletic ability
CrossFit — started it right before the pandemic and it was honestly what kept me sane the last 1.5 years (we had virtual workouts during lockdown)
Drink 🍺
I built a gaming pc, worth the money and fun to build.
