-Ability to strategically assess creative and how a client will likely respond to work
-Proven ability to lead and develop key client presentations
-Management experience (eg. has mentored or managed an AAE, coordinator or intern)
-Ability to cultivate client and internal relationships; the AS is a key point person for communications
-Mastery of process (timelines, finances, status, etc) and an ability to present them clearly
Speak to your manager about wanting to take on more presenting. You could brief in the next tactical brief, or offer to update a process or 101 doc within the agency. Shows initiative and has you leading maybe a small team, and then presenting it back. Think of things the account group could benefit in right now, whether that’s financial 101 docs or current events, changes in social media platforms, etc.
I agree with much of the above, but at that level (AE), in my opinion, they need to be asking a ton of questions AND UNDERSTAND THE ANSWERS, have the process down, build basic but positive client relationships regardless of you are just reporting on finances, doing status reports, or running projects. You need to be able to write a brief and lead a project. Show that you care and already do what the next level up requires...easiest way to get a promo, do the job already.
Appreciate the input, thank you!
When and just as importantly how, to push back. With the clients and internally.
The fact that you are asking shows great initiative and a willingness to learn. That in itself is something that will put you ahead of others. Agree with all the advice given already. If you are looking to move up in your company I might also suggest talking with a supervisor or lead to ask the very same question. Say that you’d like a check in in regards to your progress, what they see you doing well or where you might need more experience (and know that at your level it’s not a matter of doing things wrong or badly but more opportunities to learn). You can then ask what they would look for you to demonstrate in order to show you are ready to be at the AS level. This will give you a benchmark for where you are and where you need to get to. It will help you better identify what you need more opportunity to learn and can proactive ask to take on the next one that comes along. Good luck!
Very strong business acumen; ability to support great work; attention to detail; able to partner with middleweight clients; able to distill problems into singleminded solutions.
I’m an AE already doing the job of a Sup since my Sup left and went to another agency. Been doing it for 2 months, how do I got about having the convo with my boss for a promotion? Or is my boss already aware that I deserve a promotion?
Speak up for yourself, don’t assume anyone will give you anything. You’ll probably have to wait until the next review cycle, but start having those conversations. Cite examples and the Sup job description.
Do you skip Sr AE and straight to Sup at your company?
It goes AE straight to AS
