Library science is useful for content strategy
@OP Fellow CS here... I’ve had similar thoughts and agree completely that a degree should augment your knowledge not reinforce what you already know.
Professionally I’m inclined to believe Data Science is the most fruitful path...it’s where I feel the industry by way of client demand is headed (for better or worse).
Personally, I’m still leaning towards an MBA with focus on psychology/consumer insights. I think the skills there lend itself more to leadership roles/future growth. Perhaps maybe taking a Data Science program in Coursera etc
I got a Masters in IMC, and while I don’t regret it, I don’t feel like it offered as much value to my career as I thought it would. However, maybe because it’s a little more holistic than a program that has more of a niche focus. Some classes were interesting, but others barely scratched the surface in that specific topic. Depending on what you’re interested in, I would look into short individual programs (For example, HBX Disruptive Strategy immediately pops into my head) or certifications. Again, all dependent on what you’re looking to get out of it. If I could do it over again, I’m not sure I would have gone down the grad school route given how much I owe in student loans. Good luck!
FWIW, I'm looking into areas that are inclusive of consumer psych, behavioral insight, MBA, etc. but I'm wondering if I should also look into more data science-focused programs. I don't want to pay for a degree that just reinforces what I do on a daily basis; I'd rather it be a way for me to tap into a niche that enhances my present work and shakes out some paths for me to grow into for the future.
Or is that maybe asking too much out of grad school? 😐
I would err towards a MSBIA. One would need a solid understanding of con behavior in order to generate relevant data driven insights.
+1 for data science
I would also explore DTC / eCommerce programs, if available.
Thanks for the replies! It helps to just talk it all out, and I really appreciate y'alls input.
@GL1 - I agree about the data science path. Being able to present analytics is so sexy right now and it doesn't actively hurt to go for it, but my heart is v much in the MBA/psych mindset. A reasonably priced and timed program that captures enough of both sides would be ideal (rather than getting academic experience in one area while trying to self-learn the other). I've been looking into data science e-courses through Lynda, Coursera, etc. but I feel like it's all such 101-type content. :(
@Manager - The grad school/existing student loans hurdle is overwhelming, and there's no way I can mentally or financially handle a sort of buyer's remorse when getting my Masters. I've actually been thinking about the HBX Strat program as a sort of stopgap as I figure my shit out, so I'm glad you mentioned it!
I have a masters in marketing strategy and innovation. It has worked well for me

I’m personally looking into a masters in business analytics.
