What are some of the best interview questions you have been asked? Why?

I actually like the common question of telling me about yourself. You learn a lot from learning about a person's life. I also like to understand how people view their strengths and weaknesses when you can get them to be honest. I don't really directly ask these questions and try to make the conversation fluid and natural. I think it's also good to test people's analytical skills so ask them how they'd solve a random problem. I also want them to deeply explain things on their resume. If they can't they won't be effective in my industry or being honest in their resume.

Over the years I've interviewed and been interviewed 100s of times. Practice with a lot of self reflection makes for perfect. Over the years I've also spoken to a lot of people on this topic both to share, collaborate, and learn myself. This might sound weird but interviewing is like dating. It's a little awkward, but if you put a smile on, show care for the person, and be yourself it becomes no different then a conversation with a friend. You just start with easy questions and work your way into harder ones. You don't need a rugged script. Based on what they tell you, you eventually start to feel out your next question. Hope this helps.

Nothing wrong with directly asking questions. If you leave too much open to their imagination you might confuse your audience. Tell me about yourself is direct, but also opens enough room so you get a natural response. That's how I typically phrase it.

Tell me abt your hardest week at work.

What’s the proudest you’ve ever been of a direct report?

The best thing I can think of is after the interview process take them to lunch. That’s where their guard is down and you can both figure out if they’re a fit.

The most memorable question I was asked during a panel interview was very simply: What do you like to do? In response, I asked for clarification “what do you mean?”… for/at work? My life outside of work? He simply said… “however you’d like to answer.” I can’t remember how I answered exactly. Some combination of giving my “why” (e.g., what gets you up in the morning?). But I remember liking the question and reflecting on it for a long time after.

I’ve interviewed for several positions AVP and VP roles since October of ‘21 internally with Citi. Didn’t take any of them because it would have been only $8k - $11k salary bumps. For double or even triple the work. So I’m leaving to go from $70k to $235k in September at a competing firm for a VP level role. The moral of the story: hop if you need to. No reason to stick around for low pay and not being compensated fairly by the company that expects “loyalty” from you.

In the recruiter interview I wasn’t asked where I live. The job is with a huge sports wear company in Los Ángeles and I live in Miami. Does not living in the same city not make the hiring manger want to hire you even though I would move to the jobs location ASAP? And if they ask where I live do I say I live in their city? Even though I don’t and it’s a contract position.

I got an informal offer stating the salary range before they officially extend a written offer. I accepted over email and the recruiter said this:

Are you comfortable accepting at the (lowest part of the range) and everything else listed? Or would it need to be on the higher end of the range I suggested?

What the heck do I say while being polite??? Of course I would rather it be higher than the lowest part of the range!!

The job I am interviewing for has been vacant for 5 months. Is that a lot?

Also they are a startup 8 person team.. there has been a 5 person turnover in 1.5yr.
(4 of the 5 were senior roles)

Background story - I interviewed with a company that I really want to work for for a role that I was a perfect fit for. I went through 5 rounds of interviews then was told that they ended up going with an internal referral however the entire team loved me so much and they're looking for other roles for me. I thanked them for their time and didn't really take their word but 2 weeks later I get contacted again for another opportunity on a different team. (Cont'd in comment)

I have gotten to 4 straight final rounds (4-5 interviews and a presentation for each company) to be told I’m second choice in favor of someone with more experience.
