Read the company’s press releases and, if they’re public, its earnings reports. That usually gets you a strong understanding of its business

I also usually read any competitor earnings reports, and see if the clients have internal data they’re willing to share (brand trackers, historical data, etc.). There is a good chance someone on your end has collected this from the client already; I’d ask around if you haven’t.

It's pricey but research houses like IBIS World do great semi-annual industry reports.

This is good advice, and depending on vertical and the connections you can make—its always good to make friends with the research dept at any company you work with or for regularly. In media, I’ll often reach out to friends at relevant vertical publishers with robust research departments (e.g., was a huge fan of FT’s research when I worked on a finance brand) to get more insight.

I like the Wall Street Journal, press releases and earnings reports as others have mentioned.

Talk to the people that actually make the stuff your client sells. I got so much intel from hanging out with the entomologist at a global pest control company.

Getting headhunted hardcore for a salaried banker position ($100k+ bonus) and right now I’m making $65-$70k as an FA in a development program. I’m hitting my tiers but I hate the program. This banker role would not have me in a program... what are pros/cons to leaving to go to a role like this?

Anyone know much about 'knowledge expert' roles in BCG? A friend has an interview coming up and wants to know what to expect. Is this equivalent to Specialist Leaders in Deloitte?

Hate nights alone in the hotel. It's when I most clearly realize that I'm trading such a large portion of my life - my home, SO, friends and family - for money. Will never get this time back.

What is the best message when informing the rest of your company that someone was terminated? The backstory is that this employees performance has been struggling, he was put on a PIP, and in recent convos, he’s said that his role isn’t for him. As he is getting terminated due to performance, it feels more amicable now that he knows it’s not working and that he needs to find a new job. Thoughts on message to the rest of the company?

Who is seeing a lot of clients negotiate a lot more and a lot fiercer on rates/fixed fees these days? My firm is applying the same tactics on our vendors, too.

As a European H1B holder and as things are the way they are right now could I go to say Dominican Republic or Brazil or Jamaica for a week and come back? Been closed in my apartment in NY since March and can’t really go back home to Europe for a bit and come back since I’m not a permanent resident here.
