I was laid off during Deloitte‘s mass layoff in July of last year. I have worked as an independent contractor since and projects haven’t been consistent at the client I’m working for. I’m looking to get back into a big firm and was seeing if anyone would be able to refer me or help get my foot in the door. I was a business analyst for 1.5 years at Deloitte and have several years of additional experience which I’d be more than happy to share.

I mostly learned on the job. When I ran into a problem and thought if there was an easier way to do it, I'd google it and find the solution.
Step 1. Get a job that needs excel
Step 2. Have a can-do attitude and the initiative to google things.
Step 3. Stay up until 3 in the morning fixing broken spreadsheets
Step 4. Gradually get faster until it is easy.
Pro tip: don’t ask for a guide, just google things. Literally everything.
For example:
“Why are the cells still yellow when I formatted them green?’
Google answer: conditional formatting.
If you want to solve the problem, you will solve the problem.
If it feels too manual/difficult, there’s probably an easier way. Great advice above
Second idea... disconnect your mouse and learn the shortcuts.

Trial by fire
I found someone who was very good at excel and then only asked them questions when I wasn’t having luck with google or was trying to do something relatively complicated. That is to say I used them sparingly and learned most things from trial and error or the internet.
