What are some of the common pretenses used by supervisors that indicate tough conversations are to be had regarding an employee’s future with a firm? Thanks.

OP sounds like someone scheduled a meeting with you and you are wondering if it is The Talk. ??

Not sure. I was curious about this topic. Given the remote working environment, I pick up on the slightest nuances in communications that cause me to question whether or not my efforts are being noticed / valued enough for higher ups to see me as a long term asset, or just a fungible one. Time will tell, but I would rather be prepared if the latter.

“Checking in,” discussion about your “fit” or “future,” etc.

Scheduling a meeting with you when they usually don’t. “This is not going to be an easy conversation” inviting you into their office and asking you to close the door. Honestly, if you have a bad feeling, you might be right. You should always keep your resume up to date. It’s never the end of the world and likely leads to better jobs for you down the road. If it’s not a good fit it’s not a good fit for either party. Strange to think about but it really does usually work out for the better for both.

I agree with when the conversation starts with “I’m sorry, this is going to be a hard conversation.” In my last job somehow I was always the person who termed people (small firm, no hr person) and this is how I was always advised to start. Just remember though, if you are the person doing the firing, please always treat people with kindness and respect and compassion. They won’t remember what you said to them but they will remember how they were treated.

Agreed! And I appreciate the Maya Angelou reference.

OP the answer to your concern is that in most firms you are both a long term asset and fungible. If you are good at your job - smart and work hard, easy to work with - the firm wants to keep you long term. But if there is trouble in the firm they will not hesitate to cut you loose. So yes keep your resume up to date and follow your gut.

That’s insightful. Thank you.

I had a supervisor/colleague once who always took employees out for drinks when a talking to needed to occur. I relayed that this sends a mixed message where it seems like an employee is being rewarded (drinks and time with the boss) for poor behavior, but this never changed.

It was not good for morale. It sent very mixed messages to everyone. I’m not there anymore, but I assume it’s still the same.

Is anyone interested in taking over the lease for a top floor 3 bed 2 bath, 1500 SQ ft apartment in a newly built complex in Plaza Midwood? The lease runs through Sept 2023. My unit has an ideal layout for work from home and a huge patio.

My firm has ~50 attorneys and is the best in the field. all decisions are made by one man, eg bonuses, raises, promotions. There is no transparency. The only objective measure might have been billing. The billing requirement is 1900/ yr, but a total of ~200 hours are no-charged automatically, and he goes after closing the case and no charges hours based on factors unknown. The result is that no one can track their own billables, and the criteria for bonuses are a mystery. Is this normal?

It is common practice at my small firm by two main partners to fly through transactions for clients regardless of potential conflicts (for the company) or issues that may arise. It is often chaotic and has led to lawsuits being filed by investors against the clients. I know this is expected from time to time but I feel like I’m not getting the proper exposure to doing deals the right way. Would it be better at a larger firm or is this common anywhere? Mostly deal with microcap companies.
