What are some of the crazy timelines agency producers are dealing with when it comes to getting campaigns from concept approval to launch? As things are opening up I am getting some crazy turn around requests where the laws of time and space are not invited to the brief 😝

The craziest request before I left that agency earlier this year was - 1.5 weeks to plan pre-pro and shoot, and - 2.5 weeks post for a bunch of video and still assets. Our art director was pissed bc he had 1.25 days to get briefed on the ask by the CD and storyboard a video and a cutdown of it. I don’t think we slept much during that time and as we neared launch, the client said oh we can push the date back now. Few days before launch client’s boss decided she wanted to change the entire video concept at 6pm.

Here's the universal law that even 95% of clients can understand. Pick 2 of 3: fast, affordable, good quality 1) we can do this job fast and affordable, but not good quality 2) we can do this job fast and good quality, but it's $$$$$ 3) we can do this job affordable and good quality, but it's not fast It's rare (and scary) when you have clients with blank checks and want all 3. The ones that can't/won't comprehend the above might be worth politely declining. GL!

like

Yeahhhhhh um so that universal law doesn’t really apply anymore. You can tell them that all you want but it goes in one ear out the other :-) Sad but true

I’m an Director / Editor. I shot a spot in a studio on a Wednesday morning, did the offline edit that night, presented to client Thursday morning, prepped for color session for Thursday afternoon and did audio mix on Friday morning for it all to air on national tv on a Saturday night. (it was slated for an SNL commercial break).

like

I think they meant less approvals needed and layers to go through if you were working directly with client

like

Have done two massive campaigns this year, shooting in 4-5 countries, 2 weeks prep, 1 week shoot, 2-3 weeks for delivery and lots and lots of VFX. No matter how much money was thrown at it, at one point the physical reality to what can be done is reached and the clients/our team just need to accept it.

like

Have told them it's close to impossible, and no guarantees that we'll make it as it's against my/our recommend and there's only so much you can do. They kept pushing but understood as well but had to lay down possible scenarios that could delay the project further. Clients actually came through and got us global approvals within 24 hours which is very unusual with our client. In the end pulled it off with both projects and both did really well globally but wouldnt want to do it again in the same timeframe. Had to work even harder and think even more steps ahead to make the prep/production window work

I’m bidding a job that is shooting next week but still no Talent or locations or much of anything & client side it’s crickets. So I’m just entertaining myself organizing budgets and treatments until someone notices the dates don’t make sense

like

Same. Clients want a celebrity shoot next week. No offer out to talent yet, no location, and still haven’t confirmed it’s funded. Sooo just sitting pretty and watching these cards fall.

Been here so many times! It’s like what universe are you all operating in. And is that where the Easter bunny and tooth fairy hangout? 🤦‍♀️

That gets said a lot during these situations

Today I have a good one: the team ( account & creative) forgot to show me some ideas to realize if it is possible to produce it. They made the presentation to the client. After that they told about the project (already sold) , asked me to quote it and gave me a fixed budget for the client. Also they need the bid for the end of the Day.

like

Sigh… so maddening but beginning to think not the new normal just the norm..

Same. I have an upcoming shoot in Canada and we’re just now taking to directors. Shoots mid August and ships first week of September. And it has a fair amount of vfx. You are not alone.

like

Yes. I know. Plus we want to be there bc it’s heavy dialogue. A lot of hoops to jump through to go there after I talked with an official in CA government. But it can be done. I love a challenge 😀

Four week sprint concepting -> delivery

like

Ha! Ended up being industrial + stock with VO but very scary that people are even wanting to pull this.

like

Currently producing a smaller campaign, but don’t have 100% approved concepts yet (presenting tomorrow) and have to deliver in less than 3 weeks.

3x 15 second social videos. Live action

I’m shooting in less than a month with no Talent, Director, or Location.

I keep getting 6 week end to end timelines. It’s nutty.

After working 15 months on a big project, I was replaced by another creative who finished producing it. Dream client. Dream content. I was never told this was happening. The project just kept rolling on and I was not invited to the meetings. The company recently released the work and everyone is fawning over it. Much of the concept is the same, which I had a key role in. Due to Covid it was packaged differently, but still the same messaging. I’m so angry. but not sure I have the right. 😖
