Hi, so I actually just used this method yesterday and can confirm: works like a charm

I break my to do list down into “today”, “tomorrow”, and “later” except I put “tomorrow” things into “today.”

It’s a legit game changer. I used to be busy all the time in part due to the workload, but in no small part due to procrastination. I now have fewer late nights, because my mornings are less jammed with those urgent tasks due today, because I knocked them out the day before.

The pro move is you DON’T send the deliverable early. You keep a few completed tasks in the hopper, so you can send them out at an advantageous time.

I’m trying a 45-50 minutes on, 10-15 minutes off work pattern, and it seems to help me be more mentally alert and present. Not sure if that’s the kind of productivity you’re looking for though

I ask this because I just paid for groceries with a cc and someone asked me for $2 which I didn’t have and he got angry and yelled at me because I had bags.

I’m a fourth year cap markers US associate in London. Started my career here after law school and looking to lateral back to a firm in the US. Genuinely open to anywhere but have long term prospects of making partner, and conscious that majority of my practice here has been unregistered work. Should I just head back to NY (went to law school there and barred in NY) and gain more SEC registered experience should I be looking for more secondary markets since long term would not want to stay in NY

Highly Important Question: Puppies. I’ve been working at a smaller firm for the past 2 years and will be starting at a bigger firm (about 400 attorneys) in about a month or so. New firm is about 10 mins. from my house and has a billable requirement of at least 1,650. I’ve got an older pup and have been considering getting a younger pup to be his little brother for a while. Any experiences with having a puppy in mid-size law? Shouldn’t be as bad as “big law” but just wanted to hear thoughts.

How did Cooley decide which attorneys to lay off in this week’s round?

I have heard that many were on track for 1900+ client billables, so it wasn’t just axing low billers. Have also heard people with good performance reviews and recent laterals with no performance reviews were impacted, so it wasn’t strictly those with work product issues.

Anyone have any insight?

I don’t work THAT much (1800h/year is my target), my weeks are usually 10-11 h m-f.

However, I’m still feeling overwhelmed and close to burnout, and I’m quite ashamed of it when other associates hit close to 3000h.

It’s not the hours, it’s the extreme perfectionism and level of detail expected that makes me hyper stressed when working, all the office politics and working for partners responsible for more they can handle and need explaining like kids, but take all the $ at the end of the day 🙄

Lateraled to a new firm a few weeks ago and they've staffed me exclusively on their slammed financial services litigation matters. But my background is in a completely different practice area that I love, and this firm told me during the interview process that I'd continue to work in that practice area. What would you do?

Does anyone else find it ridiculous that firms require a minimum daily time entry? For example, my firm requires us to bill 6 hours a day, whether or not it’s billable work, we have to have a minimum of 6.0 in our time entry system every day or we get flagged. If we’re on vacation we have to pre-bill 6.0 a day. Why the hell do firms do this???

I am a partner but graduated in 2013. There are a few in my firm that are class of 2012 and 2011 that still haven't made partner but are still "on track". One of those 2012 grads that is in my group told several specialists on a deal that he is more senior to me so they need to come to him before talking to me. I responded by removing him from the deal. A few other partners have now heard about this and have asked me to end my dispute with the senior associate. What would you do?

This is a pretty frivolous question, but I'm curious: how much of a premium would you place on having a great view from your office?

Of course this assumes regular office attendance, and I know this is a fringe benefit at best, but like I said I'm just curious.

Someone needs to explain to me why I need to urgently (like yesterday) explain a matter to the people running the specific part of the deal (noting to them that OC’s request is nonsense because Y) only to be copied two days later - “my colleague X will provide”.
