What are some of your idiosyncratic formatting preferences? (NOT Oxford comma, double space after a sentence). For me:

If a heading is a complete sentence, it should have a period at the end. No case name abbreviations in a table of authorities. Don’t use Id. for record cites (I don’t know why…I just feel this).

This is the APA standard but I find most people don’t follow it:

For tables, text in leftmost column should be aligned to the left. All other columns should be centered.

Thanks. I had no idea.

Justified for everything - briefs, letters, memos - I don't like seeing messy edges.

Italicized case names, never underlined.

No spaces between footnotes and no indenting footnotes.

like

I put periods outside of the parentheses for non-case citations. Example: (Complaint, ¶ 5).

This seems logical. There is a period outside at the end of case cites. (S. Ct. 2020.) looks awful

I do not capitalize headings (other than the first word). Same with email subject lines.

Hey folks, very new to investing. I want to hold SP 500 in my Roth IRA. What's the major difference between Vanguard SP 500 ETF and the mutual fund which also tracks that index? Only difference I know is that vanguard mutual fund requires 3000 min investment whereas ETF doesn't. What other differences are there?

Additional Posts in Big Law

Curious if anyone has experiences they could share of transitioning from Biglaw in US to positions in Europe, namely UK, Germany, and Belgium. Are those positions mostly limited to in-house at foreign-based companies, or is firm placement an option (assuming not simply transferring to a European office of your firm).

Had someone lateral into our firm as a fifth year (soon to be sixth). They were kind of a retool and went from small law to the firm I’m at. They are still learning a lot of basic stuff, and I think it’s weird that the firm hired someone at that level as a retool. They sometimes ask me for help with stuff, but I’m just getting annoyed at this point. Can I just say “no” since they’re about to be a mid/senior associate who should know all of this?

like

When it’s slow, do mid levels and seniors start hoarding the work? Feel like all our juniors are looking for work, and the upper levels say they’re slow but looking at office pace someone is lying.

like

Is it okay that I’ve been a slow junior as we’re hours away from closing? I’m trying to be proactive and available to cross things off the list but I’m SLOW: takes me long enough that they do it themselves (even though this wasn’t an issue earlier in the deal) and even on quick tasks or emails, they respond to it before I can click send. There’s also so much about closing that I don’t understand and I feel like I’m bothering the higher-ups on the team whenever I ask. *end anxiety post*
