Lol, I would never pay a music house to source music. I just want to hear what everyone likes for my new mixtape

I went to high school in LA half our school were people of color so we were blessed to be exposed to the first days of hip hop and rap. Not just Run DMC who were probably the biggest of the day but UTFO, Whodini, EPMD, The D. o. C., Slick Rick, Big Daddy Kayne, etc. they were the more mainstream. Of course there was NWA, 2 live crew and Too Short, that shit was hardcore. We were soft, we thought “You be illin’ “ was such a sick burn of a song. Listen to this Whodini song, it sounds so painfully slooooow compared to anything you hear today.

I went to school in small town Illinois, had the same exposure to these groups! Half the town was POC. I had all of those cassettes. Whodini was one of my faves, and Doug E. Plus ready for the world was the best
Reminds me of Wieden + Kennedy’s ‘Hungry Like the Wolf’ spot with Bruce Campbell for Old Spice. Pretty good cover

I also just put on the Modern Romans record by The Call, another super underrated band from the 80s.
Omg I fell down a Call YouTube hole the other day- I heard “I Still Believe” (the original, NOT the sax guy cover from The Lost Boys and realized they also did “Everywhere I Go” which I thought was either the Dammed or The Cult?? AND I never realized they were vaguely Christian?
