It’s typically about guaranteed payment i.e. a lower risk level. Take this example: package a) gives you 100k base and up to 100k bonus. In a great year you get 200k, in a terrible year you get 100k so an average of 150k. Package b) has the same total max but you get 150k base and up to 50k bonus (that’s about what a M1 at Deloitte sees as their earning potential FYI): in a great year you get 200k, in a terrible year you get 150k so an average of 175k. Higher base means higher guaranteed payment - but it typically also means lower maximum bonus.

Because unless it is guaranteed, bonuses can change at any time. They can even go away. If they are tied to company performance or department performance, you have no control over that, so a 15% bonus may end up being only 5% or worse, none. Salary is a known constant. I personally prefer to know that I’m getting paid my market value (or above) in terms of salary and let the bonus be the gravy.

Income verification for personal finances. More financial stability. Specially when you are starting out you are living close to pay check to pay check. So having a higher base and lower VC gives you the ability to project your overall financial needs.

Please don’t say pay check to pay check on this app. Unless you actually know what it’s like to worry whether you’ll have enough to feed your kids or pregnant wife you’re not the kind of person who should be using “pay check to pay check." If a young professional said that to me in an interview or salary negotiation, I’d legitimately have a difficult time not judging them for their lack of perspective .

I think you fall into the, “unless you know what it’s like” category. Hopefully that means you know how to communicate such things. The post I was responding to made it sound like an average young professional is pay check to pay check. I admit that I have a trigger here based on my personal experiences as I had to support people while working minimum wage. I joined the military to feed my family. Most 22 year old kids from good schools have no idea what that’s like. No offence intended, but honest feedback about a phrase that might affect an interviewer and make negotiations more difficult. Just because I’m aware of my bias doesn’t mean it’s not going to affect my judgment even when I try not to let it.

Salaries compound, bonuses don’t

Unless your getting a partner equity deal 😉

I have been in consultant at a pretty well known and respected firm for the last 4 months. I am recent college graduate and like my company, but don't love my comp. When do recruiters start trying to poach? how often will firms cave to opposing offers instead of letting their junior associates go? as in, do firms really negotiate salary if I come to them with another offer? Or will they just be pissed off

Booz Allen Hamilton rescinded my offer because my current firm will not waive the non-compete clause in our employee agreement. It was allegedly a capability hire, and not tied to a particular project. I work one level above entry level, and really shouldn’t even have such a restrictive non-compete. Question: The company that you are working for offers cloud managed services and has been approached by a potential client. What are some areas (or red flags) you would consider before responding to their RFP? ( I started putting together a response but would love to get your insights) Answer: 1) Understanding of current annual spending vs spending if they adopted our cloud services 2) Clients expected growth rate 3) Regulatory requirements depending on industry (medical, fed etc)
