What are some red flags to watch out for in interviews? I’ve had a few interviews lately and have seen a few obvious ones, but I wonder about the ones I’m not seeing. Any important watch outs?

I had an interview via Zoom where the panel did not introduce themselves to me. Other than their names on the zoom window, I had no idea who these people were or how the role would interact with them. They said hello, nice to meet you and then they launched into questions about my qualifications. I thought it was so odd and so off putting that I had to ask, more than halfway through the call, how I would be collaborating with these people.

Oh, and there were other red flags on that already odd call. First, the panelists weren't very chummy with eachother, which could easily be explained away but I thought it a flag about their culture and team dynamic. The next one...This was a second or third round so I already knew a fair bit about the role. I mentioned I had concerns that thier expectations billable were rather high given the primary internal goals for the role (to bring two teams together after a merger). One of the panels said in a really gruff retort "well, you can argue with them about that when you get here." Okay... I withdrew after that round.

Usually when a business hints to the need to be available at all times. That usually= "your response rate will be monitored and you are expected to be available 24/7. Even on vacation"

Listen for culture issues. I once had an interviewer sneak in a few complaints about my (potential) future CEO at a really small company (like how she has to be copied on ALL emails and will make you take grammar classes if you make a mistake). Communication issues could also come out. I'd make a list of things you're looking for in your ideal company/role and listen for signs that these things aren't present. No company is perfect but if you want a respectful, collegial place to work where you'll grow (for example) there are things that have to be there for you to thrive.

It varies depending on the person. For me, hearing the word challenging isn't an issue. The same thing with big personalities. I personally don't want to be micromanaged and I want a boss who will trust me. So, when I heard the CEO had to be copied on everything and even made an employee take a grammar class because his work wasn't up to her standards (despite the fact that he's worked there for many years) that screamed micromanagement and I ran for the hills.

Look and listen for clues during the interview process around role clarity to ensure there’s not a subtle bait/switch going on with the actual position vs. the job description you applied to. I recently went through a 4 week interview process for a certain position and it became clear during the interview(s) that none of the panelists agreed on what the role and responsibilities were or even the job title. Red flag. Not only would you be set up for failure as soon as you walked in the door, but how could you possibly negotiate salary when the position was posted as non-managerial “Integrated Scheduler” but what they actually wanted was an operations manager with multiple direct reports?

I am midway in an interview process and have spoken to 2 VPs and the CTO. Each has asked me if they have scared me off yet? To be fair, they admit that they are intentionally trying to change the culture of this company. Should I be scared?

Advice needed: I’m a SR CW looking for my next move. After hours and hours of applying and shuffling through job postings, I’m intrigued by the possibility of making a move to UX writing. So my question is, what’s the ROI on earning this certification? Should I go for it or just learn UX on the fly?
