What are some strategies that can be implemented with a 4th grade student who’s on a 1.4-2.4reading level, according to the STAR test. This student just transferred in and he is very well spoken, has a large vocabulary(uses words that typical 4th grade students may not), and has a great creative imagination. His goals include reading fluency and written expression. He cannot spell nor read basic sight words without help. Sometimes, it seems as if he is waiting for me to read before he tries.

I'm a big believer in Reading Mastery Fast track to help him catch up. Make sure he knows his sounds. When he begins reading passages push more reading and not so much of the scripted lessons. When he gets stuck (because new language rules) go back to teaching the important parts of the lessons in combination with reading.

Sounds like you need a lot more information on him. Also sounds like he has learned that if he holds off long enough someone will read to him. He probably does not have many tools in his “toolbox.” Are you trained in any specialized reading programs like Orton-Gillingham? Do you have LLI available to use with him? He needs very specific and direct instruction to help him build his reading skills. I think it’s important to listen to mom but carefully weigh what she says with what his performance demonstrates at school each day. He’s fortunate to have such a caring teacher on his side! I wish you the best.

I second O-G!! I use it with my kiddos! I'd also recommend backing off on the fluency goal until he has his phonics rules and sight words mastered.

You are so welcome- they have great lessons by skill level based on their assessment. You can choose fluency or decoding or comprehension and it gives you a detailed lesson plan and the activities you need to complete the lesson as well. Another website with great activities is the Florida Center for Reading Research FCRR.org I think. You can search by grade level and skills. Lesson plans and all the things you need to teach the lesson are there as well.

Now, his mom said that the work I sent home(before getting all his info) was too easy for him. For example, I gave him AMI packets with CVC words and the like. All I knew about him at the time was that he was in a 1st grade level. The mom said he complained because he knew the words and could read all the work. He recited and sighed about the work as he walked around his house. But, at school he says he cannot read that and waits for me to help him or read for him ..... however I make him sound the words out first. At least trying to get him to try.

Can you look on the STAR lessons and print off items for him?

I don’t know but I’m going to find out. Thank you so much.

I’d use speech to text with him. For example, I might have him create his own sentences using sight words, use speech to text to create the sentences. Have him read his sentences for homework practice, while also circling the sight words.

Hi my IBM sharks..

So I joined IBM five months back and just a week back I got a project.

Since my shift is 11:30 am - 8:30 pm, I started clocking in my hours in Workday from previous Monday for shift allowance and its pending for approval with my people manager.

Guys can you tell me when should we contact our manager by the end of every week or by the end of the month to get the entered time approved on Workday?

Secondly, does the people manager approve it or the project manager?

Additional Posts in Special Education Teachers

Hi. I am a Transition teacher in California. I would like to know what is the ratio of students to staff for community outings in your districts? I have been teaching in my district for 20+ years and it has always been 4:1 ratio for our moderate/severe transition classes. Now our director is saying it's 6:1 and I don't feel like this is safe for our students.

Question: If SPED students are receiving their Resource Minutes AFTER the regular school hours from their peers (8:30-10:30) is that Legal? Hello Teachers! I hope all of you are doing well to the start to the new school year. I’d like to ask those of you who are California special education teachers a question. IEPs service minutes lunch snd breaks being included in daily minutes.
64,800 min. are required number of service minutes per year( for grades 9-12), you divide that by 180 ( 180 school days) = 360. In those 360 minutes of their day ;lunch & break is included correct? I mean some students have that as goals in there IEP. Help

Hello, I was wondering if anyone knows of or has curriculum for students in a Study Skills class?

I have been given three sections of Study Skills with 15-20 students in each.
I have always taught SDC, but this year my district said that we can do that now. When I got my credential I was not allowed to teach Resource classes unless I took classes and received the Resource Certificate. Does anyone know if this is legal?

I received my credentials in 1996/1997 and the other in 1998
