I talked to a local psychologist about the loss of social interaction for our kids. She said that she is seeing some interesting opportunities for social skills work on conference calls. She hypothesizes that seeing facial social cues is easier on a conference call with the direct view of each face. She also can see that kids are more aware of their disruptive behavior, such as side conversations. Now she would want me to say again that these are just hypotheses she is making from what she is observing in virtual groups she is running (and that she wants to research them). But she encourages us to use the proliferation of conference calls (and she does say kids need to be talking to peers, family, etc this way for their emotional and mental health) as reflection and practice moments with our kids.
I, for one, was glad to have a new view of all of the conference calls that are taking over my family every day!
