What are some tips for a brand new BigLaw associate who is starting their legal career remotely? Worried about how to get work, networking, etc. without any face time in the office.

I’m a second year and would be totally down to zoom with any new first years that reached out or had any questions!

I graduated this year and started at my firm this fall. I’ve been remote the entire time (I’m not even sure if I have an office rn lol). I think a lot of the general advice for new associates applies to the remote world as well.

Your number one networking tool when you start out is just doing excellent work. Treat partners and senior associates as your clients. Be thoughtful about what you are doing and why. Find ways to make their lives easier. Make sure you understand team norms and expectations.

“Networking” is just an abstract way of saying build relationships with people. There’s no way to artificially do that, you’re going to build connections as time passes and as you are known as someone that is reliable.

Also, I highly recommend the book Swimming Lessons for Baby Sharks.

It’s going to be tricky. I’m currently helping a mentee navigate this and recommended sending out emails to those she worked over the summer. Though this is only really helpful if you were a summer associate at the same firm. But this could give you a chance to remind them of the work you did, let them know you’re excited about coming back, and request a short 10-15 min call or zoom to touch base and see what they’re working on. Hopefully, partners and seniors will realize the tough spot all new junior associates are in and will be gracious enough to give you some time. Good luck!

Thank you! Sounds like your mentee is in good hands. I summered last year and luckily stayed in touch with a few people I worked with regularly. I’ll definitely try to reach out to others and virtually meet them.

Interviewing after 90 days at new job - how would you explain this to a recruiter / hiring manager without making it sound like you’re jumping from a burning ship? I really love the company’s mission but it’s just an overall bad fit and the role is vastly different than what I originally signed up for.

I posted a little while ago but I have noticed a number of compliance issues with my current org - not using imputed income for domestic partnerships, tons of I9s not filled out correctly, snd remote employees tax withholdings not being updated to the state they live. I’ve brought them all up with my supervisor but nothings happened. I don’t wanna get caught up in an audit. Should I send some sort of official letter or just resign and look for a new gig?

Crossposting here and in biglaw. Our FY ended Sept 30 so we're in bonus/annual raise time. I originated about $80k of work, all collected. I get 100% "origination credit" but that doesn't count for anything unless you're a partner. As an associate, what's a fair ask for a share of my originations? 20%? 10%? Be happy I have a job still?

I recently started at a new firm. I'm a female third year. An older male partner treats me like his LA and has me print things for him when he has a printer on his own desk. He makes me figure out setting hearings when he has his own VERY qualified LA. He makes me do a lot of LA work and it's quite demeaning. I've also even had an associate have me spend hours making his own hearing binder for a case I'm not even on. I get having to do grunt work at times, but I'm getting fed up with this. Tips?
