The fact that you're asking this means you know nothing about how to move from tech to strategy.
For number 1 read the following books to understand what strategy is and is not.
Good strategy bad strategy by rumelt
The strategist by cynthia montgomery
Also listen to the podcasts from firmsconsulting
2. Read the book i mentioned in my post above.
The complete the consulting offer season 1 from firms consulting.
You could also read some of the early chapters from mckinseys book valuation to understand thebpillars of value creation or you could do the business case training from firms consulting
Those items should give you the skills to talk in an educated manner about strategy.
3. Finally without an mba...you need to somehow spend time around executives that can staff yoy on a strategy project on a trial basis. Once you are in...you had better crush it and hope that they are willing to transfer you over.
Also you need to do all of this while doing amazing in your current job
My guess is that completing the steps above will take about 12-16 months but id expect that you will get what you want on the other side
Nope, strategy doesn't really give a flying fuck about certs. MBA helpful but not required. I don't have an MBA. Do good work and get sponsorship from a strategy leader willing to take a chance on you.
You might be able to become a functional area strategy person but i have not heard of anyone getting a cert and moving into a business or corporate strategy position.
You would have better luck doing training from Firmsconsulting.com and reading The Economics of Strategy by David Dranove and then seeing if a strategy senior manager will staff you on a strategy project
@op i thought about this in more detail and have a plan for you.
To make the change you need to complete three things
1. Know what strategy is and what types of problems it solves
2. You need to know the skills to perform it
3. You need to somehow convince someone that you have those skills
Lets break down how to pull off all 3
@DD1 already on an s&o project so I'm asking what else can further the transition. Best not to comment if you have nothing valuable to add.
Thanks, SC1. Will looking into the resources!
Not really...i dont see those that often
You could try to get a togaf or sabsa cert if you want to do IT strategy or IT Security strategy
Let me clarify: Non-MBA certification
Yeah, no.
what about designations like cfa? Do they pay off in strategy?
