What are the actual benefits of marriage?

I learned a lot from my wife and became a stronger, more diligent person as a result of her influence. I think that has helped my career. Emotionally, I think it evened me out a lot also. I always knew I wanted a family and she is also a really phenomenal mother. I'm living a pretty traditional American dream scenario. Early 30s, wife, kids, home. I'm a big believer in the value of progressing thru life's stages - not getting stuck in one. There are certainly trade offs and things I don't get to do. I am certain I would have enjoyed being single as a young professional making money in the age of tinder.

I'm not sure marriage is for everyone. Benefits, you get someone to be with (forever...), you can have kids with that someone (which may or may not be a good thing - but another topic altogether), you get impacted by the marriage penalty (taxes), and you are also answerable to someone (limited independence and decision making capability). That said, it certainly can be positive, too - you can share all sorts of dark secrets about yourselves with the reasonable assurance that they won't make social media the next morning... then again, maybe not. Marriage is, ultimately, what you make of it... be sure to marry for the right reasons (money and sex are not the right reasons), put everything into it (commitment and a willingness to compromise - a lot). Marriage is about giving more so than receiving and that takes getting used to.

There are few quantifiable economic benefits. The primary benefits are all emotional ones. And generally folks who don't understand the emotional benefits aren't gonna understand after someone else explains it to them. So basically, if you gotta ask you're not gonna get it.

Marriage is what you make of it. If you are convinced you are with someone who is too good tor you, youve won half the battle because you will always be willing to make amends

I always cringe when people say their spouses are their best friends - my best friend will forever be the same one I've had since I was 5

Best thing about marriage - all the time you save that you used to spend trying to get laid - you can have great sex whenever you want and it gets better as you go along. Also, kids, companionship, somebody to vent with, shared financial responsibilities, and an extra set of caring parents, assuming you love and respect your in-laws. Choose wisely!

If you marry the right one you'll have a best friend for life.

Pretty sure everything anyone has listed thus far for "what you can get from a marriage" can also come from a committed relationship minus the certificate. So I'd like to ask again, taxes aside, what benefits are there to getting married?

like

Marriage is fundamentally different than living together. Something shifts in the planning and ceremony for you and your families- the people getting married become each other's first family- as the parents let go a bit. You get more authority as a couple both in the family and in the world. Taking a call from your boyfriend at work is perceived differently than taking a call from your husband. And if/when there is a medical emergency you have authority to take care.

I’m the one whose ex won’t pay for college - and I have an update. My ex texted me today that he and his wife are buying our son a car (!!) for Christmas. On the one hand, it’s one less expense for me. On the other hand, my ex won’t pay for college and he owes me at least $10K for previous medical expenses, but he can find money for a car - which is a “fun” expense that will get him brownie points with our son. Whatever - my son benefits, but talk about a “Disneyland Dad.” Ugh.

EY High Deductible Health Plan vs Open Access Select (don’t have EY bowl access yet) I just started at the firm and am trying to pick my healthcare. My question is, what does it mean that it’s not a “national network (Is this a national network?: No)” but it’s “network coverage: see any licensed doctor”? Those seem to contradict. Also HSA vs FSA, as a healthy 26yo, which is right for me (High D only has HSA)

I have been in full time permanent work my entire career. If I were to transition to a full time contract role where I’m paying for everything, what is a formula I can use to calculate the salary I want if I’m trying to get a 25% bump in my total compensation? Ex - if I currently make $100k as a permanent fte and my next job I want to make is $125k but I go from permanent to contract work, what is a suitable figure to ask for? Need to calculate paying taxes and the benefits I would be losing.

I’m a 29 YO female, almost 6 years experience total, at a 115 base, guaranteed 126 if I meet utilization, with potential for more bonus. No target school or MBA. I’m happy with where I’m at, but are my male counterparts on here making more or relatively the same?

Feel terrible about myself at the moment, been going through some emotional things the last year or two and have a fancy occasion to go to next week. Tried on various dresses in closet including recentish purchases that were up a size or two and nothing fits. Noticing crazy weight gain (not pregnant) and bloating constantly but unsure if I should go to a nutritionist, doctor for full work up, or start a food log. Don't eat fastfood and often times eating 1 meal a day etc. Anyone been here b4?
