FM? Financial Management? Functional Management? Facilities Management?
If FM= Financial Management, then CFA, FRM, or CPA for the widely applicable certs. A more niche one like CTP (treasury) is good if that's your interest/focus/goal. If FM = something else, don't know what to tell you.
ummmm....you said "firm" and posted this in the public sector bowl and then talked about switching to private sector. that doesnt add up.
If you have a public job you should also have a career progression plan or an individual development plan.
OP is definitely at a contracting company
If you’re sticking to Federal/Gov space and you’re in FM. You can opt for a CGFM and/or CDFM certs. You do NOT need a CPA if you’re going one or two of the above.
Both of the above will make you $$ if you plan in staying in contracting Federal/Gov and Defense space.
Make a plan. I personally believe a PMP will not provide you with anything that you won’t learn on your job, so it’s not as valuable.
The only people that care about certs are federal contracting officers. They use certs as risk mitigation for predatory contractors. Every contractor out there says they have the “best and brightest” and over the years, these liars have burned the government way too many times. So I’m defense, for example, someone who has a CDFM has at least taken a class and been tested on knowledge of general DoD budgeting and spending. Since a candidate with that knowledge is more likely to actually have that knowledge, the government will pay for that reduced risk. Another problem here is large multi-year contracts.
If you are doing private consulting, your engagements are much shorter. And if your firm staffs someone who isn’t an expert, they get fired forever. Companies don’t care about the certs, they care about project completion and quality of work.
