It all depends on grade level. My school has started a positive reinforcement initiative that good behavior is recognized. I use class dojo in my classroom, but many other uses chart.
Thanks
I highly recommend Teaching with Love and Logic, in combination with the principles of a calm assertive classroom. You can learn more at https://www.ervineducationalconsulting.com/
I use a parent letter home that has to be signed by the parent. On the back is a lengthy paragraph they must copy too. If it isn’t turned it with a signature at the start of class the next day, I call home. Only two parents have complained.
With all respect: I’m curious what the copying of the paragraph is meant to teach? It sounds like the old days when kids had to copy sentences over and over, “I will behave in class.” I would rather have them write about what they did and why they chose that behavior; taking full responsibility, and then wholeheartedly write what their plan is for next time. This type of self reflection makes kids think.
consistency is the best tool. state your expectations clearly and as simply as you can, then take whatever time is needed whenever they need reinforcing. being lax prematurely and expecting students to simply follow them because teacher said so if a huge mistake. be consistent with their implementation, even when it's inconvenient to you. in the long run, you'll have students who know what to do and why, and expect consistent acknowledged via class dojo points for following then, it consistent losses in points for disobedience. if you want structure and classroom management, you will honestly get as much as you put in.
I use class Dojo-after 50 points they get to go to the treasure box, our caught being good slips, bucket filler slips for kind behavior, positive reinforcement. However, I set my standards high at the beginning of the school year and I stay very consistent with my kindergarten class.
I give my kids a POA (Plan of Action) on our whiteboard everyday. I spell it out-lunch, read aloud comes before writing, bathroom breaks, change in schedule with visitors, etc. any thing I can tell them about the day in advance, I do. It helps with crowd control, less questions, and more engagement because they know their daily purpose.
