Agree with above that stupid one off perks do not add to a positive culture. Rather, spend that money strengthening the existing systems. Get people reviews on time (maybe use the money to motivate bosses to do them?), raises when expected. Dole out gift cards or mini bonuses to immediately reward good work. The basics are what are lacking where I am and our only perk is free booze and I do not need or want free booze. They have floated other perks but they always falter or disappear entirely. So, I’d also advise that whatever you do, make sure there is a commitment to actually doing it for a good long while.

We used to be able to nominate coworkers for any reason with a little tribute. Every week all the nominations were read and put into a hat. Two names were drawn and given $25 gift cards. It was great because it empowered the team to show some love and it was exciting to be nominated. We also did a monthly or quarterly bigger prize but the prize mattered less than the gesture. Another idea is to let anyone who manages anyone to have a small budget for spot bonuses. These can be small like $10-50 Starbucks cards, but allows managers to show appreciation without the red tape.

Money. Forget the parties, free bagels and the haircuts. Take that budget and provide a nice “thank you for your hard work” to your people. Last I heard, money pays the rent and puts food on your table. Dare to be Different.

Bonuses. Even if it only comes down to a few hundred a piece. It shows that they’re valued and that “the boss” widely felt it was a better use of the budget instead of free pizza Friday

@CD1 Every so often one of the partners would come into the office on a Friday with a metal attaché case handcuffed to his wrist (seriously) full of $100 bills and they would give one to every single employee, no strings.

Can't speak to whether it was the best, but when I was at CPB we used to have a monk on staff. We also used to have $100 Fridays which was exactly what it sounds like. I have now made myself sad.

Forget lavish Town Halls and one-off, disposable perks. Higher salaries, opportunity to WFH when possible, good PTO policy. Well-paid/happy employees lead to a good corporate culture

Forced fun is hard for sure... Tying back to jobs is a way to have success. Strength Finders sessions, Myers Briggs, etc. Offsites often gives people tools for their jobs, bond, and helps them outside of work too.

I had just had a baby.. and I was and this small shop/DM agency and the owner walks in and hands me $1000 Check and tells me “here for the diapers”. It was unreal.

I'm not sure what's gross about it. I feel like you wouldn't second guess it if it just showed up in your paycheck as an occasional mini bonus. The theater part was just to make it fun. It was sort of a little party and something for everyone to share in together. That's what having a culture is.

Definitely wasn't a cash grab booth. It was handed to you individually in an orderly fashion with a nice 'thank you' to go with it.

Well I instantly got the image of a rich old dude throwing cash over folks fighting at his feet to catch it, kinda "dance, monkey, dance" style... Feels like there could be a more graceful way of doing it, that's all. Thanks for sharing, never ceases to amaze me the stuff I learn on here.

Used to have a chiropractor come to the office so you could schedule weekly adjustments. They waived the co-pay since they got to see so many people in such a short time ... my back misses that!

Mindfulness classes - We used to have an instructor come on site bi-weekly to teach breathing technique and help you release stress. I lived for these 30mn. It helped me reset my day, get away from my desk, forget the noise and just be still for 30mn. My productivity that day always gets better. It’s been a game changer for me

There was some jackass at my last agency who would come in with two dollar bills and ask the creative deptartment questions, rewarding those who answered. Now that was demeaning. I'm still not sure what that guy actually did.

Also, skill development. Lunch and learns, paid membership on Lynda or budget for a class outside work. I worked at a place that have everyone a $500/yr learning budget for anything they’d like (excluding fitness)

I’ve long disliked the term ethics. Definitions of ethics all refer to morals. Morals are very personal and vary a lot from person to person, culture to culture. Law is how we as a society express our preferences and impose rules and restrictions on ourselves. So the question should never be about whether companies can be ethical. What does that mean? One person thinks eating meat is unethical, another thinks it’s perfectly ethical. Companies should focus on complying with the law.
