Had a great weekend linking up with fam, went wine tasting, fine dining and all. And I love it when my six year old says she wants to be a CPA when she grows up. But do I really want her to go the CPA route? My younger sister’s a doctor, brother in law’s an engineering manager at alphabet, both grossing 600K annual Bay Area combined both dumb as hell when it comes to business/finance. Sorry maybe just hating a little bit here. Am I wrong to suggest my kid to choose tech instead?

Most of my cases don't ever even reach litgation. However, I just settled my first case that I truly thought was going to trial. The feeling is odd. A mix between satisfaction and disappointed. We won but it was still odd.

I bought an XPS 13 in 2014, it’s getting pretty old and I’m going to need to replace it soon. No major complaints on XPS, and some articles I’ve seen recently seem to still rank it as one of the best laptops. It’s a little small, wondering if jumping up to XPS15 is a better call. Any other laptop recommendations?

I had a review and came out feeling terrible. September was pretty much back on track but April and May I billed ~half, and while things have picked up there is really no way that I’ll hit my target. They focused so much on hours while only referring to actual feedback as almost anaside (it was good) such that I couldn’t even feel good about that. I’ve been trying everything I can to get work and my stress is through the roof. Any advice or words of wisdom? I’m feeling paralyzingly anxious.

I received an offer for a government job after one interview where only standard questions were asked and there was no time to get to know the team. Is it weird to request another informal interview so that I can get to know who I’d be working with?

I’m a Canadian lawyer in London, UK for a week. Any London lawyers want to meet for a drink? I practice family law and I went to law school in the UK before becoming licensed in Canada.

Just realized that when a partner says “finalize” something for them, they mean create it out of whole cloth ahahahha.

Is it a wise career decision to go from a national firm to a local but strong firm? Practiced with the national firm for a year and a half. The firms are the same type of law, but the smaller firm has less billable requirements and is offering higher salary/better bonus structure as well as more independence such as ability to completely run own case load.

If you could design a law firm how would you do it? For example, high rates/high pay, lower billing quotas, PTO, compensation ideas? Bonuses? Just curious to hearing some ideas.

Anyone here successfully living the FIRE lifestyle? Trying to focus on saving and paying off student loans, but I sometimes feel like I should spend my money to justify my work hours.

How long after starting your first job would you say it should take before you have a full, regular workload? I started my job Monday and have only gotten two projects so far. I feel like I don’t have enough work, but maybe that’s normal at the start. It’s especially hard to get work right now, because most of the partners are working remotely. Out of sight, out of mind.....

Not excited by our bonus structure. Everything is dictated by billable hours and I’m just churning with no motivation.

Received a 15% increase from current firm, considering lateraling for 60%+ increase. But at my current firm, I love my partners, work is okay, WLB is good. Any advice? Any support/encouragement to still lateral?
