What are the best questions to ask to understand what the day-in-day-out duties of a role are? Things look very different IRL vs. on paper.
How do you find out what a position is truly like without revealing your hesitation too much?

Talk to someone who works in that role and ask them to share the good, the bad, and the ugly.

You pay $84.99 per month for LinkedIn's Sales Navigator. You then research all the people who currently and formerly held the role you're interested in. You then connect with them on LinkedIn. You then ask them for 15 minutes to give you the lowdown.

This is GENIUS. I didn't even know this was a thing. I am totally going to start using this. Thank you for sharing.

My favorite thing to do is ask good questions during the interview. "What does success in my role look like to you? What areas of improvement do you see in the role/company." Things like that help tell you what their real expectations of you will be.

What is the longest you have gone before hearing back from a job you applied to? I applied for a job a few weeks ago and had two in person interviews, 2 weeks ago. I haven’t heard back yet. That being said, a lot of people did apply for the same position. So I’m just curious what your threshold is.

I recently interviewed for a great company and they are offer me a base + commission salary of which the base salary is much lower (15k less) than what I was making in previous role and is also below the industry rate. They say the commission will make up for my expectations. Now I am in a bit in bind because this is great company and will give me good exposure for future opportunities but I also want to negotiate the salary. How can I approach this?

Anybody out here know of any “development programs” for mid career professionals looking to transition to sales? Have a data/analytics b/g., but I’m much more social than a “typical” data/analytics person. We have a program at my company that I’m networking to get into, but believe it’s prudent to diversify options, as there is obviously no guarantee that they select me for the program.

I was very successful as an internaional sales exec at a startup for 15 years before we were bought by a large publicly traded company. The culture shift was dramatic, as was the way that I was expected to work. I was laid off a tortuous 3 years after the buyout.

While I was in some ways relieved (put me out of my misery!) I spiralled pretty hard and after a while started working PT jobs, gig type stuff, etc. while I figured things out, and healed from burnout.

I am a sales rep and have worked extremely hard to build a large book of business. Every year upper management seems to find a way to cut commissions and make my hard work, worth less. Is this common? It’s pretty draining to work harder and get paid less year over year even though you’re typically getting more business. I don’t feel valued. Do more for less? Any other great sales companies/ industries that people are happy with and compensated accordingly? Preferably uncapped commissions
