Can't remember the exact name for it but basically sandwich your pushback between two nice statements.
"I understand you want xyz...."
"but *pushback *"
"though we can do abc as an alternative. How does that sound?"
It's a lot more collaborative than if you only said the middle statement
Clarify what you believe you heard and interpreted. Get validation on that, then state your perspective without emotion and managing your tone. It might not be what you’re saying but how you’re saying it.
Just a guess: Find a way to frame your thoughts in a way that invites challenges. If people see you accept challenging input they may open up.
But yeah, keep your strong 'voice'. That's an asset. I need to pull it into 1 on 1 to win over major stakeholders and am pretty easy to steamroll in a group setting.
Say "That's definitely an idea worth considering" and then move on
I always acknowledge their viewpoint, consider it and offer my feedback as a counter to that. People can continue to disagree or debate, but the acknowledgement upfront diffuses tensions a quite a bit and makes your audience more willing to continue to engage without shutting down.
LOL I hear you and I totally agree that the videos are cheesy AF, but the approach absolutely works. People have a harder time getting defensive or combative when they see you truly considering their viewpoint. It just is how it is. 😂
