What are the dangers of officially reporting bullying under your firm’s policy, especially as we head into a recession?

Just always remember: HR is there to protect
the company, not you.


Particularly if the person you’re reporting is senior to you, a rainmaker, or is well connected within or outside of the firm. If you’re reporting a “nobody” subordinate (like you’re a senior reporting a freshly hired not well connected junior) you’re probably fine unless what you’re reporting also shows wrongdoing on the firm’s part. Sad it’s this way, but that’s the reality. HR is not your friend


So, there is actual bullying from known bullies. Doesn’t happen nearly as often as it used to. So, someone throwing a stapler at you because you had a typo in the ancillary document. That’s bullying. It’s also assault with an office supply.

I would report it.

Then, there’s, “I made a $1 billion mistake and someone raised their voice at me,” which also gets reported as bullying. There? You quickly become someone no one wants to work with. And it’s not retaliation. It’s because it’s not worth working with you; the risk or headache of being the next reported person just ain’t worth it - even though they know they would be cleared.

And these people who repeatedly report (on different people) totally normal behavior? Just like bullies, they exist too. Actually, in my mind it is a form of bullying. Technically, you could get reported in return. A false or exaggerated report is a no, no. Does it happen? I have never heard of it at a firm because most people subject to a false report just want it to go away. But i have definitely seen it happen working with companies, so I am sure it happens at firms too.

Man this Bowl is filled with some angry mid-levels. We get it, this job was hard for you, but it is for juniors now, too. Stop punching down.

I don’t think the juniors are entitled, they just want to share in their firms’ wealth. Surely any salary increases for the Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 would easily pay for themselves through billable hours.


As a Junior I have this internal battle of being like a monkey and doing exactly what I’m told to do even if it seems wrong vs. actually using my brain to point out errors in instructions or make judgment calls (on low-level things) but risking being wrong and looking dumb or making the midlevel feel like I’m trying to one-up them. Often times, the partner’s comments validate what I was thinking but I still don’t want to alienate any associates or develop a bad rep.

Anyone else have this issue?

After clerking, my BF recently accepted an offer from and joined a V50 firm (been there a few weeks). Shortly before his start date, he heard back from a V5 firm (one he’s wanted to join for a while) and just got an even better offer. Practice groups at each firm are also different.

The office he joined for the V50 firm is in City A. The office for the V5 firm is in City B (where V50 firm also has an office).

How should he break the news to the V50 firm to minimize reputational risk, etc.?

Literally just got a follow-up from him saying ‘any issue running redlines for the lead investor?’ Just.. ... ... ... what?!

How bad does it look as a second year to be out of pocket for one Saturday per month in June, July, and August? I have three weddings (one each month) that I’m in - two are family members and one is a childhood friend. My group is pretty chill/relaxed, and I work probably 1-2 weekends per month, but I’m in corporate so it’s super unpredictable. I just don’t want to be pushing it as a junior.
