Retirement funds will shift your asset allocation over time (towards less risky assets as you approach retirement) and will generally have a small fee layer on top of what you’d pay for a market index fund for the service. Totally rational arguments for using or for going in a different direction
S&P isn’t a “retirement fund”, it’s broad market exposure by investing in SPY (or similar ETF).
Nothing wrong with it if you’d like ~2% dividend and appreciation. You could put you investments into a better targeted fund if solely for “retirement”
The performance of the S&P is largely supported by 25% of the companies. The rest are losers. Of that 25%, over 55% of the value is generated largely by FAANG and other tech companies

The retirement fund I’m investing in currently allocates 55% to VTSMX, 36% to VTSAX, and the rest to two different bond funds. I’m willing to have a risky portfolio considering my age. Should I move my money into ETFs and purely stock?
If you're comfortable with the swings, absolutely. You'll get better returns. For reference I'm 38 with ~97% stocks, I have a high risk tolerance.
SP 500 is fantastic, that’s where my money is going.
