What are the downsides to moving to a foreign office of a US firm? Does it pigeon hole your career? Want to do a few years at least abroad in Asia (UAE, Hong Kong, Singapore etc.) just to explore the world a little bit and potentially get that UAE tax free pay (not a US citizen but working in US BigLaw).

I work at a US Biglaw firm in Singapore. Singapore offices are generally sweatshops - associates in the NY office bill way less than we do. This is because Asian counterparties and clients are way more demanding and unreasonable than American ones (at least in my experience). Singapore is also soulless and boring as the prospect of easy weekend trips around Southeast Asia has been killed by Covid. I haven’t worked in HK but understand it’s the same, except possibly with more hours and a higher cost of living. Not sure about UAE, though.

A3 - I can't speak for all the other Asian offices, but my friends in Singapore and Tokyo enjoy it.

A2 - I have friends in 3 so called "V20" firms in Singapore that were in NY and moved to Singapore.

I have Asian clients that are extremely frustrating to work with, and they require alot of "handholding" at least on the corporate transactions that I am in. So I do get why ppl might dislike working there. However, at least from what I hear, the NY top sweatshop firms have it worse in terms of workload. There literally are no weekends in many NY biglaws, whereas I heard it wasn't the case in Singapore or Tokyo.

Tax and admin complications can be a pain unless your firm has done that before and understands how to do this. And when I say tax is the firms taxes not only yours.

If you’re an LPR, you’ll still have to file taxes in the US; so you’ll get double taxed.

like

Not double taxed. Will get foreign tax credits for amounts paid abroad. But do have to file two tax returns (US and other country) and pay whatever is owed in each (the US excess after foreign tax credits)

Hey, Chi. First time caller.

So I'm considering a switch from law to consulting, and noticed EY has started posting salary ranges for positions. All the mid- to senior-level jobs I'm looking at are in the $95k to $150k range. Is that right? True for all the big 4? Seems super low. I guess I never thought about it before but how exactly do you folks get paid?

Recruiter: can we meet next week for just 15 mins?
Me: sure

I then had a look at the job posting and it was “no longer available”. But my application still shows as “under consideration”.
