What are the etiquettes for brainstorming over hangout/zoom with creatives for you? Personally I find it really hard to keep everyone’s energy up.

I prefer cameras off for this stuff. It makes the awkward (but needed) silences more bearable

Interesting, I felt that camera on lets me read the room a lot better.

I’ve dropped zoom completely for brainstorming with my partner. I just go for walks with headphones. Also that destroys the urge to jump around on the internet and distract myself.

like

My partner does the calls from his porch so he’s the one usually scribbling down whatever we think is a good thought. But if not I just use notes on my phone.

I’ve been on the phone my partner with 10-15min silent gaps sometimes before one of us jumps in with a new “ok, what if we...”

I think it’s helpful to do Zoom AND something like Slack at the same time. Talk through the brief or the situation, give people a little time to jot ideas down or word-associate, put those things in Slack, then call them out and ask questions, talk through the ideas. Helps even out the auditory/visual/written learners and keeps the energy up because there are two levels of communication happening. Have done this with groups as small as four and as large as about 13. It’s worked well.

Slack is way better than Zoom for video conferencing, give it a try. You can do exactly what you described just within Slack. I do it all the time. And you won’t need to fumble with meeting links and codes, you just make a small direct message channel with everyone’s @ name, and then hit the call button

Try leaving the camera on, but don’t feel like you have to sit in front of it the whole time or at all. Come and go as you please. That way you’re spending time together but not staring at each other. Just don’t forget the camera is on. 😂

Try MIRO. Way more fun and more like sitting in room with a wall full of ideas.

In a meeting I said, “creatives can be savages sometime.” because of their unruly behavior towards internal teams, pushing deadlines, or throwing tantrums. I was called out and chastised by a junior creative for using the word “savages” in an unacceptable manner because the word is slur to non-whites in a zoom meeting. I am a BIPOC creative. Am I the asshole?

Something a little more fun that got me thinking - attended a Zoom dinner party with a French guest and an English guest. They asked what typical American dinners are. I didn’t quite know how to answer fairly since I’m from the Midwest, and that answer can be so regional, not to mention cultural! What are the two meals you think of first when you think of your families? Definitely interested in anyone who is not American too!

Friend wants to join consulting for the pay. I don’t believe she has the aptitude or energy for it. We worked together in a much slower industry, and even there she complained of being overworked. I’ve sent her resources to polish up her resume and links for roles but she’s insisting on texting/long phone calls asking silly questions. Today she wants a resume review over zoom! She comes without having done her homework. How do I tell her I’ve given as much as I can? How do I decline referring?

I’m furious of course, but have other things I need to be concentrating on.

In 2020 I was diagnosed with epilepsy. I have a number of seizures a day but don’t knowwhen I’m having them (EEG detected it). I started on meds and am feeling much better, however the only way to know if meds are 100% working is to go to hospital for 3 day EEG. I’m supposed to try to live my daily life as much as possible during EEG so I need to work. But can’t do zoom calls. I hadn’t planned on disclosing my diagnosis to my boss but now feel like I’m backed in a corner here. (Cont in comments)
