Direct. The. Art.
Make sure stuff is in frame particular keeping in mind other asset needs. Supers, logos, banners that use footage? Keep an eye out for getting options in edits. Think about how blocking will impact how you’re using the footage (need anything verticals?) make sure you’re getting all the shots. Also keep an eye out for any weird thing the director has added to the shot to live out some dumb joke they have with themselves but is Uber distracting to what you need to show in 30 seconds
Making sure the shoot is executed in a way that was sold through to the client
Making sure the assets would look good in multiple formats: 9:16, 4:5, 1:1. Even if you are shooting for in-feed posts, it’s always good to have some extra shots
You want to know exactly what the photographer/director is doing at all times, however that does not mean micromanage them. You hired them to do their job, give them the space to do it.
If they ask clarifying questions (they should), be there as their resource. If they stray off course, check in and bring them back (hopefully, this doesn’t happen).
Bring your shot list and make sure you’re actively checking things off. This is especially true if you’re working with a photographer who shoots tonnage, because it might look like you’re getting everything, but you might not be.
Status after each setup with the photographer’s production director. Make sure you’ve got what you need.
If you’ve got any doubts, talk to your producer. They’re an invaluable resource for you. And have fun!
