Myth - you'll be bored and want to kill yourself due to the bordem Fact - only true for people who have Stockholm syndrome who miss being worked to death. Also true for people whose life is work and are workaholics

Couldn't agree more

Myth: You won’t make as much money over the long term. Fact: You will get a huge bump in pay and depending on the company you join you will probably get a nice yearly bonus that public accounting firms could never match unless you make partner.

like

A huge bump isn't always there.

like

Myth: you’ll have a nice 9-to-5 life Fact: it really depends on the company. You have to do your research

like

If you did research, what did you do?

I'll start: The work won't be challenging. Only true depending on the job you're doing and the company you're doing that job for.

like

How did you get from tax to Corp dev? That’s the pivot id want to make

Myth: you will have no flexibility and will have be on the office 9-5, no more working from home, etc. Fact: not true. I’ve worked for three different companies and have always had the ability to WFH. As long as you get your stuff done, people don’t care, just like in Big 4.

like

Myth: your career will stagnate and you will have no mentorship. Fact: depends on where you go and what the company does. Also I’ve seen people’s careers stagnate and I have no mentorship currently at B4.

like

I have mentors, just none at my current firm, so it’s been tough. It’s not B4 though, it’s just my office. And reason why I know is because I had mentorship before.

Don't be afraid to venture out. The next position you hold is your responsibility to make the most of. You own it and exceed their expectations. Ask questions about a good career path and test the waters of their culture. Don't be shy about asking the hard questions when you interview. They will respect you more for it.

like

Agree, it can be worse- more hours, crappy annual % raise.

like

Myth: you should stay until manager. Fact: staying until manager will make it much harder for you to justify leaving due to your comp. Leaving at senior will give you a bump and, depending on where you go, can provide similar upward mobility to public

Guys I know this question has been asked before, but just want to hear some thoughts on this. Is it worth it to go from one big 4 company (EY) to another (Deloitte) for consulting? The major factor is pay increase. The major down side is loss of people network. Thoughts?
