Private sector consulting
Pretty similar to private sector to be honest. I’ve seen colleagues from public sector consulting go on to very similar roles — obviously if the exiting commercial sector is in the purview of that consultant then they have an advantage. I’ve been contacted for roles in financial services, smaller private equity shops (no joke), energy companies and tech mostly. If you’re in DC and want to stick to DC, all tech companies have a presence here; Marriott and Nestle may be good options; VW / Audi and Ford have corporate offices, etc etc the list goes on. I would just recommend refining your story for the sector you’re interested in entering, that’s always been how I’ve sold myself and it seems to work.
SM1 - I was asked to interview for a deal team position.
OP - roles were corporate strategy mostly for industry. I know that some startups around DMV look for a lot of BD positions if that’s your jam. I’d also look at the big A&D companies if BD is your thing and you want to stick around the DC Area. Other good corporate strategy gigs would likely be with the big players (Capital One). I know of a colleague that just left for a strategy role with Uber in the DC area — they were on the GPS side.
Definitely software companies - I left in 2019 for a software firm and got more than a 50% raise and have a much better work life balance.
Left consulting at $155k and joined a software company for $235k plus stocks ($80k vesting every year for four years)
You’d have to volunteer your sector for the sector to matter. It’s not something that employers can discover.
