Right. Only about a third of our salt group does state compliance. The rest is credits and incentives, VAT, and sales and use. I'd say pros: better work life balance than other groups and minimal travel. Cons: almost impossible to become a partner (Executive Director is more likely, but still really hard), and more limited exit opportunities
What's that?
Pro - a lot of billable hours. Con - get screwed from fed, international, and any other tax group that touches the return before you
@TA1 - OP didn't say SALT compliance - there is also lots of consulting opportunities there
Not sure about the Income Tax side, but at least with my experience with the Sales & Use Tax side, you do quite a bit of consulting/researching for the client to help them avoid paying sales & use tax. Nexus is a big thing.
Following this post, I'm curious too.
How do I transfer into SALT ?
I'm in SALT income franchise. My job is minimal compliance; fortunately, my focus is mainly consulting.
worked in salt for a bit. one of the staff kept saying "get out while you can." so I did just that. never looked back.
@RSM1 what do you do now?
Long term it will limit your exit strategies, but overall the work itself is pretty interesting. Source: Been in SALT for 8 years
Pros: none. Cons: salt sucks
