What are the pros/cons of Crossfit? Skinny-fat guy here trying to get into real good shape.

Also considering UFC gym or getting a personal trainer

If you haven’t lifted before or it’s been a bit recommend a personal trainer to work with you on form and such before setting you free, too many worthless CrossFit gyms that have no clue what they are doing and you will get injured, not saying all by any stretch but plenty of them

likehelpful

I agree with this. Definitely a lot of bad coaches/gyms out there. @OP where are you based? I can reach out to some mates/other coaches to see if I can find some good gyms for you to try out if you’re interested.

The hardest part of CrossFit is the physical therapy needed after you hurt yourself

I got into the best shape of my life doing CrossFit. I have a friend that was an amateur MMA fighter and used CrossFit to improve his fitness. Let me know if you have any other questions about it - I eventually became a CrossFit coach

What’s funny is two of my friends said the exact same thing, and became coaches....still have 50 year old knees at 30 🤷🏻‍♂️

CrossFit can be a great workout, but it is notorious for having a hyper competitive culture that’s all about bragging about your gains on Facebook. A lot of people get wrapped up, push it too hard too fast, and get themselves injured.

If you haven’t worked out in a while, there are a lot of great programs you can find out there that are safer and free (CrossFit also tends to be $$$). Look into Couch to 5K and Starting Strength.

I like CrossFit a lot. Not affiliated with a gym so I can’t speak to the culture. It’s also super expensive ~$150- 250/ month. I invested in a garage gym that has most of the equipment at a smaller scale. You’re not here for that though.

I was doing workouts of the day for awhile but to preserve my body, I’ve gone away from them. Instead, I’ll take a WOD and do them throughout the day and even add volume. Given the nature of our work in consulting, I use small workouts between work to break up the day. Also, this allows me to focus on form and maximize the reps. Doing the WODs for time compromised form because of the fatigue, which I knew would lead to injury eventually.

Other than that, I really enjoy CrossFit type movements, TTBs, snatches, thrusters, cleans, etc. I find them super challenging and fun.

Hope this helps. Reach out if you want to talk about programming workouts and stuff. Hopefully, I can help give you a springboard to get going.

Youre on the right track..these gyms will fry the fat off of you and build muscle

Been to many CrossFit gyms, and not all are created equal. Some are great for fundamentals and make sure your form is perfect before letting you scale up in weight. Those same gyms aren’t great once you have been doing it for a while and need less help on fundamentals and want to get to the strongest you can. Other gyms are terrible at teaching and too competitive. That’s where you get super strong but will absolutely end up hurt.

CrossFit will get you into better shape but I hiiiighly recommend getting 6 months of Brazilian jiu jitsu it Muay Thai or some other real martial art under your belt. Everything you listed in a good idea OP

OP - you want to work on the skinny part or the fat part?
For skinny - sure, CrossFit will help, but there’s nothing better than lifting heavy. You’ll build up to it. Get a trainer if you’re clueless.
For the fat part, it’s mostly about looking at your diet. Calories in < Calories out. Calories out is hard to increase by a lot.
UFC gym if you wanna get better at fighting - has tangential relevance with your skinny-fatness.

Thanks everyone for the comments! Some additional context

1) I need to be part of a regimented program (i.e., a class or something) to keep me consistent and to push myself. So working out solo won’t work

2) Money isn’t an issue - happy to pay 200/month

3) looking to lean out overall while putting on lean mass, but mainly want to get rid of love handles and drop BF by 8-10% while getting stronger (5 7” 145 lbs)

4) mediocre lifter, I bench/squat/deadlift but am not a pro

With all that, what’s beat? UFC/Boxing gym or CrossFit? Definitely don’t want to be injured either. Happy to pay 5k and hire a personal trainer as well

IMHO, your diet will make much more impact on your belly fat, and maintaining lean muscle mass, than literally any workout.

You don’t need to go crazy with the diet. And, if you can’t hang with the guidelines below, then it probably doesn’t matter how you exercise.

1) Eat less sugar. Try to get down to 50 grams/day. You probably won’t make it that low, but it’s a good goal. It helps to avoid foods that have sugar added as an additional ingredient.

2) No more soda, or sports drinks. Not diet. Not lite. Not zero. There is no acceptable version. Carbonated water like La Croix is fine

3) Stop worrying about fat and carbs. Worry about eating lots of real foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and (if you eat meat) high quality meats. Generally try to shop from more the edges of the store, and less from the aisles

4) Dairy may not be your friend. This may be more of a personal thing, but I find keeping my dairy low, results in better feelings in my guts

Appreciate this! Definitely want to get fitter in general as well so this + fitness will do the trick
