What are the stereotypes/misconceptions you heard about having ADHD before you were diagnosed, and are any of them true for you? Kind of trying to wrap my head around my diagnosis

That people with ADHD are disorganized. My apartment isn’t. My writing isn’t. In certain areas in my life I can be such as organizing the thoughts in my head while I speak because I can’t visually see my ideas in front of me to figure out what to say next. So I may jump around different topics or lose my train of thought.

Another symptom I’ve heard is that we’re compulsive. I think I have it under control. I typically don’t overspend or compulsively act. Go with the flow to enjoy a night out with friends? Maybe. But nothing drastic that it’s destroying my life in any way.

I think we have to understand that there is a spectrum. Some have it more severe or pronounced than others. Sometimes it’s only for specific things.

There are ADHD things that I do that I had no idea it was because of my ADHD such as spacing out, forgetting past conversations, difficulty finding the right words, being stressed out easily, pulling all-nighters, and lacking the ability to retain info on boring materials.

I agree especially with the last paragraph!
And I’m extremely organized and everything in my apartment is always in place 🙃

That people with ADHD are failures. Sure I feel my falings with more intensity but that doesn't mean I'm an idiot.

It's even worse as a women. I'm either anxious, depressed, or it's my "hormones". Or maybe it could be an actual defined lack of a neurotransmitter?!

People are a lot more "comfortable" giving sympathy for things they can see which is honestly sad.

I agree with this one as well. I spent so many years feeling like I was such a failure. Turns out I just needed to be medicated so that I could really get more done. And being on meds doesn't make a persona failure either, which was something I also believed.

I think the misconception is also between some diagnosed by “psychology” that provided excuses for people that extremely distracted and “unable” to sit still. New researches show that signs of adhd are actually hyper intelligent people who think we’re deeply and fast on things (as oppose to the the “old” psychology that basically “allowed” it to be used as if the person is unable to think very thoroughly about anything because they always have to move or can’t think much, basically used as excuses for laziness or none self discipline at all.

I think the unfortunate stereotypes were born because people who don’t really have adhd or incompetent professionals who easily “gave” this diagnose to wrong people who just were lazy to do any development or education.

It is indeed a difficulty when having an adhd to stay from start to finish on something because our minds can hyper think of additional tasks an ideas to work on. But it’s completely the opposite of those who do nothing and say “I’m sorry, I can’t concentrate. I have adhd” 😣

like

I heard a lot of the kind of exaggerated (in my opinion) hyperactivity stereotypes about ADHD but most of them haven't rung true for me. I would say that I do fidget and have trouble sitting in the same place all day, but it isn't extreme to the level it was described to me by people who didn't have it lol.

like

ADHD manifests differently in men and women and depends on socialisation. M or F?

Always the hyperactive nonsense. I’m the impulsive subtype and about as mellow as they get…

likeuplifting

Yep I am right there with you. I am not hyper active at all.

like

I think I thought ADHD was explicitly seeing someone distracted, but now obviously I understand it can manifest in many ways. Conversationally, it has become more easily detectable for me as opposed to my earlier years.

like

I agree with this. This was kind of the same thing for me. I always thought because I wasn't super hyper that I couldn't have ADHD. Now I know that is not necessarily so true. It really can manifest in many different ways.

Hyper-focused, unable to manage time properly/prioritize tasks, lazy, unfocused… All huge misconceptions!!

Super hyper, doesn't want to learn, lazy

Misconception that those with ADHD are not academically successful. My executive functioning may be in the gutter, but I’m still extremely smart and one of the lucky ones able to compensate for many of my deficiencies with my intelligence

like

Growing up, people around me used to say that adhd is just an excuse for laziness and that people with adhd just need to try harder. I was diagnosed as an adult which makes me more self-aware. And I'm here to bust that myth. I'm an overall hardworking person I hate it when I'm lazy. But I do have my days.

like

I've always that people with ADHD are super hyper, can never sit still, all over the place. I'm pretty chill, it's just hard for me to concentrate.

Anyone struggle with getting a morning workout in because you are anxious about the emails or feedback from work from the previous day? I'm trying hard not to check my phone first thing in the morning but if I do its hard for me to leave my desk or be occupied about work.

Also, I concentrate much better in the morning so my innervoice tells me to skip the workout and focus on interview prep and other deep work activities.

Evening workouts don't work for me - keep me awake or too tired.

My 16 y/o has elevated proBNP (390), which I know isn’t diagnostic, but vet has given me the option of getting an echo or waiting and repeating the BNP in a couple months. He doesn’t seem to have symptoms of heart issues, though he’s been diagnosed with asthma and has had coughing fits. Other conditions that can elevate BNP don’t seem to be at play here. Trying to figure out what the best approach would be.

Now I asked HR for just 4 days early relieving, but she is not accepting. Stating the same corporate line, it's the business requirements l, we can't let you relieve early.

Is there an option for me that she accepts or anything else I can do.

I went to a psychologist and answered an ADHD questionnaire, basically scoring the highest possible score for ADHD. Long story short: the psych told me that since I made it through law school with a decent/good GPA l don’t have ADHD.

Has anyone been told this? I.e., that since you’re a “professional” and have had good grades you don’t have ADHD? I just feel it’s a bit unfair since I had to work myself to the bone just to stay focused and understand the material.

I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 12. My family did not opt to put me on medication. I illegally discovered Adderall in college. Worked incredible. Got diagnosed after college & after having been fired from my first job. Passed the CPA exams on Adderall. Went off of it again. I do everything well at my job except for attention to detail within my excel files & emails. Will taking ADHD medication really fix this? Does anyone else have this issue and was it resolved by taking medication?
