Hi Folks,
My wife has 5 years of experience in Banking Industry now she want to switch her career in IT, she has worked as coding instructor for html/css/js/react native, she has React certification as well. Now she is ready to take interviews.
Now how to convey this to recruiters and are they ok to take interview for frontend developer, how much experience can be considered and what salary can be expected?
Posting on this bowl….as I believe this bowl has huge chunk of people coming from PhD background….do you guys feel you’re not really performing the so called real-life work here at consulting. I feel that my responsibilities also shrunk as compared to PhD. I used to write the grant, lead the project, and do everything….here I’m just taking notes on calls. And these MBAs, they do treat us as second class citizen. I mean I know they’re not that great at leading calls most of the time
I recently got an offer for an internship at Big 4 this summer in technology consulting data & analytics. I’m wondering if any fishes (interns & full-time consultants) can give me some insight into what you guys do on a day to day basis. do you enjoy it? what type of skills have you developed/what tech do you work with (sql, power bi, python etc) EY PwC Deloitte KPMG

What’s your favorite typeface?
Nielsen Norman (site with research/best practices), Baymard (comparison research with examples ) Google Material Design (descriptive with how app creators should design/code for android), Deque Axe-Con (Free digital accessibility conference with archived videos on YouTube), Don’t Make Me Think (book)
Thanks so much! I’ll look into these
Where are you starting from? Have you done any work relating to graphic design or psychology previously? Or are you pursuing this all as net new? Do you already have a UX design job,
My basic recommendation is to always do the stuff that is free before looking to do anything paid, that and renting/buying books to read that are well-known/praised. Ie anything written by Don Norman.
There’s a couple of known communities, mainly catering to those that are fresh. You can find them on LinkedIn, Discord, Slack, Reddit.
Medium articles and searching forum posts can help create a list of good books.
Figma and Adobe conferences usually have some good learning panels. They also have community resources. There are a few free short course/programs offered from IBM and salesforce as well.
If you are fresh and aiming to get a job doing UX design as quickly as possible, you have to focus on your portfolio work. If you decide a paid course is the only way you can do that, you’ll need to do your own due diligence and make a final decision based on your available time and money. However there’s not a degree, badge, or certificate that will get you into a job faster than somewhere else. Connections/pipelines from boot camps that help you get into a job might help some, but with as many graduates and limited number of entry positions there’s no realistic promise of a job shortly after graduating anywhere.
You make a lot of good points. I asked about the community names because I’ve had similar experiences and that’s been frustrating. Small consolation that it’s not just me looking in the wrong places.
I’ll explore some other UX roles-perhaps there’s something there that I haven’t thought of. Thanks AED1
