Would agree - Bain efforts have been timely, honest and appropriate. Not sure what else Bain could do.
OP - I understand you are hurting and frustrated, and I do feel sorry. Anything that you reckon fellow bainies could do to support you more?
As a POC I agree with OP...while I do believe some of the emails have been genuine efforts to show empathy in light of the current times, for those of us who’ve been deep in work trying to help Bain’s D&I efforts it seems callous to come out in full support of Black people without recognizing the gaping hole (and lack) of black leaders in our own firm...recognize the (low) baseline and commit to actions internally to fix our own shop before proclaiming all the cool IP you are going to build
The OP asked for tangible examples of how other firms are dealing with situation. OP also mentioned they’re “hurt and frustrated”. Yet people on this post are slamming him/her for their income? Telling them to quit?
It’s incredibly rude and toxic to approach someone like this.
Thanks for this. Trying to genuinely stay open to discourse so happy to hear any thoughts you have.
Why do you characterise bains emails as “sorry excuses of allyship”? They have been unambiguously supportive in their communications and have announced investments of teams and resources to address issues of racism and injustice. They’re not being apolitical at all. Not sure what else you’d expect a company to do?
I know I cannot fully appreciate the immense pain and frustration you are feeling, but I Di want to say Bain as a company is trying to help. If you think there is more we could be doing or things we could be doing differently please reach out and speak up. Our regional managing partner invited people to reach out to him with ideas for what more we can do - take that invitation, it was genuine. Help us all make a positive difference.
I don’t believe that Bain is a place that caters to or genuinely promotes ethnic minorities. It’s not surprising that they don’t step forward is any real or meaningful way on issues affecting those communities. As a white guy, I can confidently say that this firm is a business built and benefited by whiteness. And I don’t believe that would ever change - how and why would it? One of the best things most ethnic resources could do is start a firm of their own in their own image.
So true. Even though Bain in the past few years has been trying to get more people from minority groups/ people of color/ internationals etc. in the consulting funnel, the leadership is all white with no effort to get more minority folks in the leadership. Most of people of color are weeded out during manager promotion because of harsh ratings from white managers who don’t connect with people of color. It’s such a shame
I've been thinking about how Bain doesn't really acknowledge the fact that all of our "value add" accumulates to white stock owners.
How does working at bain = selling out your principles? If you have a problem with a specific client you don’t have to work for them.
Chief
You're in the top 1% of earners for your age bracket, surely? What more can a company do for you?
DS1 is a classic undercover Amy Cooper. OP is expressing hurt and disappointment from is coming, your response is “you should be fine just having a job.” Such clown behavior.
What do you guys think about pushing firms to “divest” / refuse to support companies that are directly involved with the prison industrial complex (eg like Aramark, Securus)? I know over-policing and profitable prisons is only one part of the issue, but it would be a pretty substantial stance in solidarity. I just can’t imagine it would ever happen.
